Our Mission

Our mission at Marketplace is to raise the economic intelligence of the country. We seek to increase economic literacy and empowerment at all stages of life while amplifying the diversity of experience of our economy.

Over 10 million weekly broadcast listeners and 1.6 million podcast listeners rely on Marketplace to break down what economic headlines, policies and reports mean for our personal economies and how the impact of this news differs vastly across the country. Marketplace’s reach exceeds even the largest TV audience for business content, including Fox News, MSNBC and CNN.

As a nonprofit news organization, Marketplace depends on funding from our listeners, foundations, corporate underwriters and public radio stations.

We are grateful for the support of those who believe in our mission and opportunity to increase our impact and better serve our audiences.

Marketplace Coverage Priorities

The Future of Work

The country is experiencing a widening gap between the jobs that are available and those trained to do them – a challenge compounded by ever-rising costs of higher education, changing global labor demographics, and inherently biased systems built by industries lacking diverse talent. How are we preparing our future workforce? What does “work” look like going forward? And how are we mitigating barriers to access?

Marketplace recognizes how technology is advancing careers and leadership across America – and how that impacts balances of power and the distribution of wealth. We also examine the intricacies of work culture and the role it plays in our labor market.

Technology and Equity

Marketplace demystifies the tech industry by examining how tech companies, products, and related policies affect our personal economies. Emerging tech promises to reshape how we live and work, yet it is an industry built with inherent biases and uniquely high barriers to access for women and minorities. Marketplace’s goal is to be the go-to resource for tech news focusing on the intersection of tech, money, and equality with solutions-focused programming.

Marketplace is increasingly focused on the complexity of solutions to the impact of AI on workforce  equity, the skills gap, training, and the future of work while highlighting how technology influences our culture and personal economies in crucial and often unexpected ways.

The Climate Crisis

Marketplace examines solutions to the existential threat posed by climate change through the lens of the economy and disproportionately impacted communities across the country. The cornerstone of Marketplace’s broadcast and digital sustainability reporting is our award-winning podcast, “How We Survive.” The podcast spotlights solutions in the technologies, legislation, and activism that offer a model for rescuing our climate from the brink of disaster.

In addition to our long-form reporting, “Burning Questions” is a video-first series empowering listeners with information they can implement in their lives — answering questions about how to find climate-safe places to live, the best and worst foods to eat for the environment, tips to climate-proof your house, and maintaining hope when all you want to do is doomscroll.

Financial Literacy

Online Scams

Enhancing the lives of children and teens with early personal finance education is critical to Marketplace’s mission to raise the economic intelligence of all Americans. We utilize a suite of “edu-tainment” tools to build better foundational relationships with money, developed with caregivers, teachers and schools top of mind.

Our financial literacy programs “Million Bazillion” (geared toward kids aged 5 – 12) and “Financially Inclined” (for young adults 15 – 25 years old) are the centerpieces of our educational portfolio. The “Million Bazillion” national school tour has taken the games, skill-building, and excitement of the show directly into middle school auditoriums across the country, while our partner, Next Generation Personal Finance, has helped distribute “Financially Inclined” videos and teaching guides to teachers. Recently wrapping its fourth season, “Financially Inclined” is Marketplace’s first video-first podcast edited with bite-sized, classroom- and digital-friendly segments.

Foundations

Every day, Marketplace peeks under the hood of the American and global economies. We want to let our audiences peek under the hood of Marketplace’s economy — and that means sharing important information about the support we get from foundations.

Who gives Marketplace money?

We receive funding from many generous foundations. You’ll hear their names on air and see their logos on our website. If we report a piece that mentions a current funder, the host will disclose our relationship on air, right after the piece.

Do they have any say in your reporting?

We believe in saying things as simply as possible. To that end, the answer is no. Never. Ever. Ever. Ever. No funder, foundation or otherwise, has any influence on our reporting.

But wait. Don’t you have funders who support specific “desks”?

Yes. For example, the Kendeda Fund cares deeply about conservation and sustainability, so it supports our Sustainability Desk. The Henry Luce Foundation wants to help Americans understand how events in Asia impact our lives, and so do we. Does this mean that they have anything to do with our editorial process for these beats? Again, nope. We simply share a passion for a given topic, and they love our reporting.

What if I have a foundation and want to make a grant?

That’s great! You can email our team for more information.
