A manganese mine owned by Manganese Ore India, Ltd.

Notes on the mineral list:

โ€” Photos of the blue-violet amphiboles from here are labelled magnesio-arfvedsonite as this is the dominant species found in these crystals. The amphiboles are however zoned, and analyses of individual crystals may show other species.

โ€” The tan-yellowish amphiboles from here show a wide range of compositions, ranging from clino-suenoite (formerly named mangano-cummingtonite), ferri-ghoseite and ferri-winchite/ferri-katophorite. Some analyses also correspond to unnamed minerals in the Na-Mn amphibole subgroup. The photos of these amphiboles are labelled ferri-ghoseite, but the specimens may contain a range of amphiboles, where ferri-ghoseite may or may not be one of them.

Mineral List

16 valid minerals. 1 (TL) - type locality of valid minerals. 1 erroneous literature entry.

Detailed Mineral List:

โ“˜ Aegirine-augite
Formula: (NaaCabFe2+cMgd)(Fe3+eAlfFe2+gMgh)Si2O6
Description: In pegmatite
โ“˜ Aegirine-augite var. Blanfordite
Formula: (Na,Ca)(Fe3+,Fe2+,Mn,Mg,Al)Si2O6
Description: In pegmatite
โ“˜ Andradite
Formula: Ca3Fe3+2(SiO4)3
โ“˜ 'Apatite'
Formula: Ca5(PO4)3(Cl/F/OH)
โ“˜ Braunite
Formula: Mn2+Mn3+6(SiO4)O8
โ“˜ Clino-suenoite
Formula: ◻{Mn2+2}{Mg5}(Si8O22)(OH)2
โ“˜ Cryptomelane
Formula: K(Mn4+7Mn3+)O16
โœช Ferri-ghoseite (TL)
Formula: ◻[Mn2+Na][Mg4Fe3+]Si8O22(OH)2
Type Locality:
Habit: Prismatic blades that breaks up to silky, asbestos-like fibers
Colour: yellow to honey-yellow
Description: Large prismatic crystals of Mn-bearing alkali amphibole (up to 25 cm in length, as in the Tirodi West Hill pegmatites) occur in Tirodi, where pegmatites cut across gondites and Mn ore bodies. These occurrences are restricted to the sillimanite zone.
โ“˜ Ferri-katophorite
Formula: Na(CaNa)(Mg4Fe3+)(AlSi7O22)(OH)2
โ“˜ Ferri-winchite
Formula: ◻(NaCa)(Mg4Fe3+)Si8O22(OH)2
Colour: Matted group of tan colored bladed crystals
Description: Microprobe analyses published on Rruff.info as winchite corrosponds to the following composition (typical): (Na0.094K0.06)0.154 (Ca1.354Na0.646)2 (Mg4.123Fe20.335Mn20.227Fe20.181Al0.108Ti0.002)4.976 Si8.025O22((OH)1.828F0.167O0.004)1.999 It should be noted that the total oxide wt% is low <98%. As Fe >Al, the composition corresponds to ferri-winchite rather than winchite. The formula is normalized using Andrew J. Locock (2014): An Excel spreadsheet to classify chemical analyses of amphiboles following the IMA 2012 recommendations. Computers & Geosciences, Volume 62, pp 1-11.The formula corresponds well with the published formula on Rruff.info
โ“˜ Hollandite
Formula: Ba(Mn4+6Mn3+2)O16
โ“˜ Kanoite
Formula: Mn2+(Mg,Mn2+)Si2O6
โ“˜ 'K Feldspar'
โ“˜ Magnesio-arfvedsonite
Formula: {Na}{Na2}{Mg4Fe3+}(Si8O22)(OH)2
Description: Ananlysis as presented by Nayak and Neuvonen corresponds to a winchite composition. The entry as magnesio-arfvedsonite is based on work by Nayak, V. K. and Leake, B. E. (1975). On 'winchite' from the original locality at Kajlidongri, India, Mineralogical Magazine, 40,395-399. Bernard E. Leake, Colin M Ferrow, V.K.Nayak: (1981). โ€œFurther studies on winchite from the type localityโ€, American Mineralogist, Volume 66, pages 625-631. Leake B. E., Farrow C. M., Chao F., Nayak V. K. (1986). Winchite re-discovered from the type locality in India, Mineralogical Magazine, 50, 173-175.
โ“˜ Nambulite
Formula: LiMn2+4Si5O14(OH)
โ“˜ Quartz
Formula: SiO2
โ“˜ Rhodonite
Formula: CaMn3Mn[Si5O15]
โ“˜ Spessartine
Formula: Mn2+3Al2(SiO4)3
โ“˜ Uvarovite
Formula: Ca3Cr2(SiO4)3
โ“˜ Winchite
Formula: ◻{CaNa}{Mg4Al}(Si8O22)(OH)2
Description: These blue to lilac amphiboles are heavily zoned, but predominantly magnesio-arfvedsonites.
