About Hanauerite
Formula:
AgHgSI
Colour:
yellow
Lustre:
Adamantine
Specific Gravity:
6.62 (Calculated)
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Name:
named in honour of the German mineral collector Dr. Alfred Hanauer (1912–1988).
Chemically related to perroudite. Also compare capgaronnite and iltisite.
The holotype specimen, for which electron microprobe analyses (EMPA), optical data, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data were obtained and crystal structure was determined, originates from the Schöne Aussicht Mine, Dernbach, Neuwied, Wied Iron Spar District, Westerwald. The locality of the cotype specimen, for which EMPA and single-crystal XRD data were obtained and crystal structure was determined, is the Friedrichssegen Mine, Frücht, Bad Ems District, Lahn valley.
Structure details:
* strongly disordered Hg2+-centred octahedra with two short Hg–S bonds and four strongly elongated Hg–I bonds, sharing edges and faces;
* octahedra merging invokes formation of corrugated layers;
* Hg- and S- bearing "crankshaft-type" chains'
* interlayer Ag+ cations.
