FINAL PROJECT|PART A|FNBE JULY15|ENBE I N T R O D U C T I O N Before I dig deeper into the project, I first have to know about the history of the ancient cities, the feature of current cities, and the traits futuristic cities will have. Because in order to improve, we need to refer to the past. Apart from that, I need to know what an ideal town is made up of. I also need to understand the relationship between the city, town, suburb, and neighborhood. Heading deeper into this project, I’ll have to come out with a new proposal to improve my town, Labuan. Gaining knowledge through searching will certainly assist me in better planning the town. 4

Usually, a "town" is thought of as larger than a village but smaller than a "city". Town is an urban area that has a name, defined boundaries, and local government. 5

It was authorized as a world-‐famous historic city in 1981. Xi'an is one of the four Great Ancient Capital Ci[es including Athens, Rome and Cairo. 33 degrees 39’ N , 107 degrees 40’ E ( Southern part of Guang Zhou plain ) 9,983 sq km 7.16 million Loca[on Area Popula[on Do You Know ? While Buddhism is the main religion prac[ced by many people in China, Xian has an extensive Muslim popula[on and the city also has a magnificent 1200 year old mosque. 6

City Wall The main magnet of Xian is the city wall, which is the most complete city wall that has survived in China as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. Top attractions of Xi’an Xian Muslim Quarters and the Great Mosque The famous Great Mosque is located in the Muslim Area. For the tourists coming here, the bazaar in the Muslim area is most afrac[ve with a wide area of stalls selling everything. 7

Serving as the largest base of Chinese industrial technology, one of the most important seaports and China's largest commercial and financial center, Shanghai draws the afen[on of the whole world. It is a roman[c place for lovers. The Shanghai financial Centre has 104 floors including three underground of a total 492 meters height, it is the second highest building in Shanghai. 9

Gli@ering Skyline ( Skytree ) The Tokyo Skytree is a new television broadcas[ng tower and landmark of Tokyo. With the height of 634 m , it is the highest building at Japan. Tokyo Skytree is not only the highest buildings in Japan , but currently is also the tallest TV tower at 634.0 metres (2,080.1 k) in height. 11

The Garden City Movement is a new way of enhancing the sustainability of urbanized area. Town-‐country Diagram 2 is a ground plan of the whole municipal area, showing the town in the centre. Diagram 3, which represents one sec[on or ward of the town, will be useful in following the descrip[on of the town itself-‐-‐a descrip[on which is, however, merely sugges[ve, and will probably be much departed from. • Ecosystem services lie at the core of the concept . • If LIFE is valuable then GREEN is valuable . • Compac[on of ci[es may compromise many of the above men[oned benefits . • Science solves . • To overcome problems of conges[on and increase in popula[on . During renova[ons, consider reorien[ng building entrances that face parking lots. • The main entrance of the building must face the street and be clearly ar[culated through the use of architectural detailing. Parking • Parking facili[es with more than 5 parking spaces must be bordered on all sides with a landscaped buffer strip at least 10 feet in width. • To create a strong street edge and an invi[ng pedestrian environment, parking should be placed to the rear or side of the building. LocaOon Area PopulaOon 92 square kilometers 87,000 people (2010) It is made up of the main Labuan Island and 6 smaller islands 8km off the Borneo coast in East Malaysia. The park is home to many species of Borneo birds most likely to be encountered by bird watchers. Labuan InternaOonal Sea Sports Complex is part of the Labuan waterfront beau[fica[on project. Its objec[ve is to create a world-‐class water sports center and to develop more afrac[ve places of interests in line with the Malaysian Prime Minister's vision to turn Labuan into a major island des[na[on. Labuan Square or Dataran Labuan is situated at the centre of Labuan town. It is a dry market which sells spices , household items , kitchen appliances , snacks , dry foods and many other items . The Sikh temple was built by a local Sikh philanthropist in 1997. The architecture was inspired by the Sikh "Golden Temple" in Amritsar. Here are a few transporta[on facili[es that Labuan has to offer Boats There are a lot of passenger boats within Labuan, Malaysia. Since the island is water surrounded, ferries and boats are found in abundance. You can book their [ckets in advance for boat travelling. Find the correct departure terminal and just be there when the boat arrives. • There are car ferries that go to Menumbok. The total journey is for 2 hours with a total of 3 [mes a day. They move towards the east dock. • Speedboats take a journey of about 30 minutes, faster than any other water transport on the Labuan water. They leave at 8am and operate [ll 4pm. 27

This is one of the befer transporta[on facili[es available not only in Labuan, but all of Malaysia. It is also the best way to travel back and forth to and from the airport. Various zones have different rates, as they usually charge a fix rate. There is also bus service. Check out some of the taxis that will take you around. • Labuan Airport • Labuan Interna[onal Ferry Terminal • Ujana Kewangan • Labuan supermarket parking area Some of the bus services are as follows:-‐ • Bus No. 6 to Lajau, The Chimney, Manikar Beach Resort, etc. • Bus No. 5 to Bukit Kuda Homestay, Terumbu Warisan, etc. • Bus No. 4 to Layang-‐layangan Beach, Sungai Lada, Sekolah Menengah Sains Labuan, etc • Bus No. 3 to Labuan Hospital and Sports Complex Plane • Direct flights are available to Labuan Airport (IATA: LBU) for both Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia. • Nearby airports are in Miri (MYY) and Kota Kinabalu (BKI). 28

- 30. C O NC L U S I O N Labuan city has a strategic loca[on . It is an island which surrounded by the sea . However in my opinion , it should be developed and improved in various aspects : A city where people can get around without an automobile, and where transit will directly influence and shape the form of the city. Transit will be a desirable choice that connects people to des[na[ons, and will underpin an environmentally responsible, inclusive, vibrant and successful city. A city where people can spend their en[re lives where teenagers want to be, where young professionals choose to locate, where immigrants are welcomed and their cultures become a visible part of the city’s fabric; and where people can age in place gracefully. A beau[ful, sustainable city with safe neighborhoods that support a strong, connected and vibrant community -‐ a place where all can live, work and prosper. People can play as a child, walk to meet a friend, fall in love, raise a family and grow old. A global hub of crea[ve and innova[ve ac[vity where talent and business thrive.
