Kristalle unterm Krönchen - Norbert Stötzel specimen. Part of the collection Albrecht Grau.
Albrecht Grau (1884–1966)
was an entrepreneur from the Siegerland region and a passionate mineral collector.
Grau built his outstanding collection over the course of his long working life, which
began in 1900 with a business apprenticeship at Herdorf’s Friedrichshütte AG—at the
time one of the most important steelworks in the Siegerland region. His professional
career in the Herdorf area—one of the mineralogical hotspots of the Siegerland
region—was virtually tailor-made for building his unique collection during the first
half of the 20th century and in the postwar years.
In 1919, Grau went into business for himself; for 25 years, he was, among other
things, a co-owner of the firm “Schaum und Grau,” the West German Mietziankite
Sales Company (chlorate explosives).
Grau, a “self-made man,” possessed both mineralogical expertise and substantial
financial resources. These enabled him to include in his collection not only top
specimens from the Siegerland and other sites but also a large suite of Tsumeb
specimens—presumably the collection of a Siegerland miner, unfortunately unknown
to date, who worked in Tsumeb.
