In the Atienza sector is found an extensive subvolcanic sill, from lower Permian age, intruded between the Silurian and Permian units. The sill reaches more than 15 km of lateral extension and its thikness reaches over 150 m in some outcrops of Alpedroches and La Miñosa.
The sill is composed of andesitic rocks with slight lithological and petrographic variations. All lithological types have a common mineral association and characteristics of phenocrystals are similar. Generally phenocrystals represent 40% of the sample and the matrix the remaining percentage (60%). The variations correspond to the matrix, the abundance of the different minerals and the degree of alteration. By its composition we can distinguish between amphibolic andesites, pyroxene andesites and daciandesites. :
- amphibolic andesites: they make up the most abundant lithology of the sill. They consist of phenocrystals of plagioclase (bytownite, labradorite and andesine - 55%), calcium amphiboles (pargasite, Mg-hastingsite and tschermakite - 30%), frequently biotite (10%) and quartz and fluorapatite (5% ) accesories. The microcrystalline matrix (55%) is partially altered and includes mostly plagioclase. In these rocks xenocrystals of almandine garnets are frequent.
- pyroxene andesites: they have a composition similar to the previous ones, but contain orthopyroxene (enstatite-ferrosilite - 10%) and a lower proportion of amphibole (20%).
- daciandesites: They make up a minority lithological type. They are characterized by a higher proportion of plagioclase, lower of amphibole and biotite and the absence of pyroxene, compared to andesites.
Dikes: The sill is crossed by a set of dark gray dikes whose lithology is similar to the andesites of the sill, although they have a markedly darker color.
Metapelite xenoliths are very frequent and partially altered. They are present throughout the entire sill and reach centimeter sizes. Its composition includes variable proportions of biotite (10-65%), plagioclase (up to 50%), almandine garnet (up to 35%), sillimanite (up to 5%), opaque minerals (3-5%) and rutile and apatite accessories.
In Alpedroches, belonging to the municipality of Atienza, is exploited the most important andesite quarry in the area . It is located between the Alto de las Peñas de Arriba and the Alto de las Peñas de Abajo. The quarry is operated by the company “Canteras de Atienza - Benito Arnó e Hijos S.A.U.”. Entrance to the quarry is forbiden and it´s necessary to request permission to access it. Since access to the exploitation front can be dangerous and restricted, in the stockpiles of extracted big blocks and in the piles of crushed rocks of large size, it´s possible to find samples of all the lithologies present. The light colored rocks correspond to the sill andesites, while the darker ones correspond to those of the dikes; xenoliths are evident.
------------------------------
