A valid IMA mineral species
This page is currently not sponsored. Click here to sponsor this page.
Formula:
TiO2
Crystal System:
Monoclinic
Name:
Named in honor of Masaki Akaogi (赤荻正樹), Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Gakushuin University, Tokyo, Japan, for his "seminal contributions to experimental petrology, calorimetry, and mineralogy, including experimental characterization of high-pressure polymorphs of TiO2 relevant to planetary deep interiors."
A TiO2 polymorph with a baddeleyite-like structure, resulting from high pressure impact at a meteorite crater.

Type Occurrence of AkaogiiteHide

General Appearance of Type Material:
Grains consisting of countless randomly oriented submicrometer particles. Optically distinguishable from rutile only in reflected light microscopy, through its slightly higher brightness and the intense royal blue color of its internal reflections in crossed nicols.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
Collection of the Bayerisches Geoinstitut, Universität Bayreuth, Germany, El Goresy section No. BGI 3.
Geological Setting of Type Material:
Heavily shocked garnet-cordierite-sillimanite gneiss in a meteorite impact crater.

Other InformationHide

Notes:
Exhibits blue fluorescence under the electron beam like both rutile and TiO2-II.
The mineral is extremely sensitive to any laser or focused electron beam irradiation and it inverts in seconds to rutile.
Health Risks:
No information on health risks for this material has been entered into the database. You should always treat mineral specimens with care.
