Named by M.A. Zakrzewski, Ernst A.J. Burke, and W.J. Lustenhouwer in 1982 in honour of Yrjö Vuorelainen (8 January 1922 - 2 July 1988), a Finnish exploration geologist who worked for the Outokumpo Company, Finland. He found the new mineral, but it was not properly described until found at a second occurrence.
