Name:
The name honours Roberto Nannoni (1943–2022) for his contribution to the knowledge of Tuscan mineralogy. Roberto graduated in geological sciences at the University of Pisa in 1967. After graduating, he became a teacher of chemistry, biology, and earth sciences at secondary schools. He was a collaborator of the Museo Provinciale di Storia Naturale of Leghorn from 1972 to 1998, and, during the 1980s, he was honorary curator of the mineralogical collection of that museum.
Homeotypic with gibbsite.

This phase was originally discovered at Francon Quarry, Quebec, Canada and first noted in the description of weloganite by Sabina et al. (1968) as a "fine-grained white mineral which gives an X-ray pattern somewhat similar to that of gibbsite." It was later reported in detail with optics, microprobe, PXRD, and thermogravimetry in Jambor et al. (1990). It was then designated as "UM1990-28-OHF:Al" in the list of unnamed valid minerals. However, due to the lack of enough pure material, the mineral was not submitted for the approval as a new mineral species. Crystals of sufficient quality were discovered later at the Le Cetine di Cotorniano Mine and formally described under the name "nannoniite".
