This week, I represented Equity Group Foundation Equity Bank Limited at the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA) Conference, where discussions focused on reframing Africa’s natural assets as strategic economic resources to drive a nature-positive and climate-resilient economy. I emphasized that natural capital such as forests, soils, wetlands, & ecosystem services such as biodiversity, carbon sequestration, water regulation, & pollination forms the biophysical foundation of Africa’s communities and economies. These systems sustain key sectors like agriculture, energy, and water, which underpin the credit and investment portfolios of financial institutions such as Equity Bank Limited Despite their centrality, the valuation of ecosystem services remains fragmented. While carbon markets have advanced, others like biodiversity credits are nascent, & most ecosystem services remain excluded from national accounts and macroeconomic indicators such as GDP or wealth–debt ratios. This limits visibility of nature’s true contribution to economic stability and financial risk assessment. Financial institutions, however, cannot wait for perfect valuation systems. Through frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), progressive actors like Equity Bank Limited are integrating nature-related risks, dependencies, and opportunities into decision-making thus redefining how finance interacts with nature. At an investors’ roundtable co-hosted by African Natural Capital Alliance (ANCA), FSD Africa, and Building Bridges, discussions centered on scaling investment pathways in green, carbon, and biodiversity credit markets to unlock Africa’s natural wealth and attract blended and impact finance. At Equity Group, we are advancing capacity building to support embeddment of nature-related risks, opportunities and dependencies in our credit and investment decisions.
