Groundbreaking calorimeter for the #HiLumiLHC The CMS Collaboration has recently completed the first prototype slice of its innovative High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), which will be the largest silicon-based detector ever built. Scientists from all over the world are contributing to the first complete prototype of a wedge-shaped slice of the new CMS endcap calorimeter. This slice – shown in the video – is known as a “cassette” and is being built in a clean room at the CMS experiment site. Heating homes with the world’s largest particle accelerator Now operational, a new heat exchange system is reusing hot water from part of the Large Hadron Collider’s cooling system to heat homes and businesses in the local area. In the image, we see the #LHC eight surface points. Point 8, home of the LHCb experiment, is located close to the French town of Ferney-Voltaire. European labs get aligned at CERN Eleven laboratories came to CERN to measure the same object using their state-of-the-art equipment, in order to establish a common definition of alignment uncertainty in their measurements. Precision measurements are extremely important for accelerator laboratories. For collisions to take place in the #LHC, the accelerator components must be aligned with a margin of error equivalent to the thickness of a single sheet of paper.
