In the latest episode of the Eurostat podcast Stats in a Wrap, we explore the European Statistics Competition, an annual battle of wits and creativity in statistics where young people use the power of video to engage with official statistics, while improving their statistical literacy along the way.

In this episode, the host Jonathan Elliot delves into the importance of the competition in promoting statistical literacy. He is joined by Ioannis Xirouchakis, Head of Unit for Dissemination and User Support at Eurostat, Kelly Sabbe, statistical literacy coordinator at the Belgian Statistical Office, and Nikoleta Šlachtová, Director of the Dissemination Directorate at the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic.

The European Statistical Competition was initiated in 2017/2018 by Eurostat in collaboration with national statistical institutes. Starting with 11 000 students in 11 countries, the competition has grown to almost 27 000 participants in 21 countries in the school year 2024-2025. The competition allows teachers to introduce official statistics in a fun way, and students from different schools can compete with each other at the national level. The winners make a video for the European phase showing the story behind the data, a societal issue or a new development revealed by the numbers.

This episode is launched ahead of the European phase award ceremony of the 2024-2025 competition (watch it live online), which will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, on 24 June at 12:00 CEST.
