The Schengen Information System has enhanced capabilities to fight terrorism and serious organised crime. A new information alert will make information shared by non-EU countries and international organisations on suspected terrorists and serious criminals available across the EU in real time. 

On 14 October, the EU signed the Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds from Crime and on the Financing of Terrorism. With strengthened rules, it will also facilitate cooperation and prevention.

The European Commission is providing an additional EUR 130 million under the Border Management and Visa Instrument to support drone and counter-drone measures that strengthen security at the EU external borders.

On 29 September, the Commission proposed a 5-point plan to prevent, anticipate and respond to sudden mass illegal arrivals. The Plan will strengthen the resilience and security of EU external borders. Member States, JHA agencies and the Commission will now work together to deliver on these actions.

The EUAA has published its mid-year review of the Latest Asylum Trends, showing that asylum applications continued to fall in the first half of 2026 across EU+ countries, who received around 332,000 applications for international protection – 17% fewer than in the same period in 2025.

The Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), with the support of DG HOME, published a new report on Strengthening the European Union’s Future Disaster Resilience. Looking ahead to 2040, the study explores how the EU can better prepare for future disasters in an increasingly complex risk landscape.
