"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

I too am getting the same error message after attempting to install the W 8.1 update. My PC is not an off the shelf box. Its a mish mash of components,I have an AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor,an Asus motherboard,an AMD Radeon HD 6850 graphics card,a WD harddrive. I have two monitors an Asus 23 in and a Mag 19 in. I cant think of any other relevant specs that you may need, please advise if there's anything else I can tell you.

I am also having this issue. My PC is custom built with the following:

    AMD PhenomII x6

    ASUS Sabretooth 990fx MB

    Nvidia GTX560

I have tried almost everything in the threads I have seen about this issue. I really think there is something up with 8.1 and Nvidia cards. I hope microsoft can assist soon.
