STM is pleased to share that Scientific Scholar has been admitted as a member of STM. This is another example of the growing diversity of STM's membership across multiple countries, bringing additional perspectives that enrich our work to advance trusted research globally.

STM has joined the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and News/Media Alliance in filing an Amicus Brief in In Re Mosaic LLM Litigation, concerning the alleged unauthorised use of copyrighted books in AI training. The brief was filed on 27 August 2026 in opposition to the defendants’ motion for summary judgment. The brief argues that using copyrighted works to train AI systems that generate competing expressive content is neither transformative nor fair use, and highlights that licensing provides a sustainable pathway that supports innovation while respecting copyright. Protecting research integrity means pairing automated screening with human oversight — a point our CEO Caroline Sutton made in a recent interview with The Bookseller.   The STM Integrity Hub helps participating publishers screen submissions for paper-mill activity, image manipulation and other integrity concerns, using tools developed by STM, its members and third parties. Sharing signals across publishers can reveal patterns — like falsified names or fictitious affiliations — that may not be visible to a single organisation.   But screening flags material for review; it doesn't prove misconduct. As Caroline noted, publishers still need a human eye on things, with each alert assessed by people rather than automatically rejected.   She also cautioned against treating all AI use as misconduct: helping a researcher improve their English is legitimate, and distinct from using technology to fabricate data or findings.   Read the full article at The Bookseller >> https://lnkd.in/e8UivYDH  

Crossref has opened up its new data citation tool for community testing, and it's worth a look if you work anywhere near data citation.   The dedicated API endpoint is built to support quick, accurate data citations. It's still in beta — currently drawing on more than 700,000 data citations, and updated continually. How should researchers disclose their use of AI?   We already expect transparency about funding, conflicts of interest and acknowledgements. AI is no different. But how to disclose it varies widely across disciplines, regions and publication cultures, leaving authors, reviewers, editors and institutions to navigate inconsistent norms.   Building on our own Recommendations for a Classification of AI Use in Academic Manuscript Preparation, STM is one of the ambassadors of a community-driven initiative — with COPE, the International Science Council and the Global Young Academy — working toward a Global Reporting Standard for AI Disclosure in Research.   The second consultation round is open, and it's where the substance gets decided: what should be disclosed, where and how, whether it should be mandatory, and how accountability is signalled.   We'd encourage member organisations to convene their editorial teams and submit a considered, shared response.
