Pay-to-play Firemaking training

This article gives tips on training the Firemaking skill for members. Non-members train Firemaking in much the same way; however, members can access additional ways to train Firemaking, such as eucalyptus, teak, mahogany, magic, and elder logs; the ring of fire; flame gloves; the inferno adze; and the Always Adze relic power. Members can also train Firemaking by burning shades in Mort'ton, but for actual Firemaking training, the vast majority of people burn logs. Firemaking is essentially a money-losing skill but can be much less expensive to train than other skills usually considered to be buyables, such as Herblore, Crafting, Prayer, Smithing, Summoning, Fletching, or Construction.
General notes
[edit | edit source]These basics of training Firemaking are relevant for both members and non-members.
- Training Firemaking typically involves training near a bank for the highest efficiency, and repeatedly withdrawing banked logs and burning them.
- Players can add logs to an existing fire to create a bonfire. Using bonfires yields more experience per log; however, a log is burnt every 6 game ticks (3.6 seconds) rather than every 4 game ticks (2.4 seconds) when lighting fires in a line. Experience gained is increased per log and is further increased by up to 4% for every other player (up to five) using the same bonfire. With the maximum boost from extra players, the experience/hour for this method provides slightly less experience per hour than lighting the logs individually, but bonfires are semi-afkable and provide the added bonus of not having to run to and from banks.
- Training at the Lumbridge Market or Fort Forinthry on world 84 is highly recommended because there are extended skilling portables the whole day and other players make frequent use of buffs like cinder cores, advanced pulse cores, rock of resilience, sceptre of enchantment and coin of enchantment, which benefit everyone around them.
Bonfires versus fire lines
[edit | edit source]Typically, people train Firemaking by putting logs into bonfires and portable braziers. However, training Firemaking by making lines of fires is significantly faster (around 20% with magic logs), as it takes only 2/3 as long to light a fire than to add a log to it, which generally more than makes up for the bit of experience lost per log. However, lighting lines of fire takes a great deal more attention, costs marginally more, and doesn't give the chance to get fire spirits. On the other hand, line fires do yield more ashes, which can be sold for a profit. The Underworld Grimoire 1 or above can send the ashes to the player's bank when they are picked up. Tarromin incense sticks will bank ashes when the fire is created (25% chance per stack up to 100%), removing the need to collect them at all. However, there are significantly faster methods for obtaining ashes.
Special bonfires
[edit | edit source]There are special, permanent bonfires that give the same 4% experience bonus in Firemaking as a bonfire with 5 people around it. They can be found in the following locations:
- At the centre of Yeti Town, after completion of the Violet is Blue quest. It can be accessed through the Land of Snow portal at the base of White Wolf Mountain, on Taverley's side.
- At the centre of the Menaphos Worker district.
- In the north-west corner of the Tower of Voices in Prifddinas, after completion of Plague's End.
- In the upper level of the Max Guild in Prifddinas, the closest one to a bank chest.
Both bonfires located in Prifddinas have the added benefit of providing a chance to save logs.
Useful equipment
[edit | edit source]The only equipment needed for training Firemaking is a tinderbox, which is used to light logs. This is automatically available in every player's tool belt, meaning that it is unnecessary to buy one or keep one in the bank. An augmented crystal tinderbox is recommended for Firemaking training.
| Item | Effect | Slot | Description | Requirements | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| High priority | |||||
| Portable brazier | +14.4% XP Save logs |
N/A | Grants +10% base Firemaking experience and counts as a bonfire with five participants for +4% additional Firemaking experience (14.4% total). Also provides 10% chance to save a log and can be placed close to a bank. Portable braziers can commonly be found on world 84 (Portable Skilling), usually at the Lumbridge Market or in Fort Forinthry. | N/A | |
| Fired up set | +2 to 5% XP | Provides a 2% experience boost per worn piece of the set. Wearing the full set provides a 5% experience boost. | 62 79 All Fired Up | ||
| Reborn phoenix | 7% chance to burn 2 logs at once | Grants 7% chance to burn 2 logs at once when using bonfires or portable braziers. | 84 | ||
| Low priority | |||||
| Gnomish firelighters | Automatically collects fire spirits | N/A | Can be struck, consuming the firelighter and granting a 5-minute buff that causes all fire spirits, divine fire spirits and forge phoenixes to be automatically collected and increasing their rewards by 30% (stacks with the Brooch of the Gods for 50% total). This buff can be stacked up to 60 minutes by striking multiple firelighters. | N/A | |
| Brooch of the Gods | Better fire spirit rewards, increase log saving chance | Increases the chance of saving logs from 10% to 20% when using a portable brazier. Increases the rewards of fire spirits, divine fire spirits and forge phoenixes by 20% (stacks with gnomish firelighters for 50% total). If Invention has been unlocked, it will also regularly spawn divine blessings which give Invention components. | N/A | ||
| Superheat Form | Burns cut logs | Automatically burns all cut logs for immediate Firemaking experience. | 91 The Light Within | ||
| Always Adze | Burns cut logs | Automatically burns all cut logs for immediate Firemaking experience. | 83 79 | ||
| Orthen furnace core | Spawn forge phoenixes, grant the Furnace Core buff | Grants the Furnace Core buff whenever the Pyromaniac perk activates, increasing Firemaking experience by 5% for 5 minutes. Forge phoenixes will spawn instead of fire spirits, providing improved rewards. However, the forge phoenixes do not grant the same additional experience as fire spirits. Because of this, the Orthen Furnace core will often decrease Firemaking xp/hr rather than increase it. | 102 99 | ||
| Pitch can | Increase log burning speed | Reduces the ticks between adding logs to bonfires and portable braziers from six to five ticks, allowing around 200 additional logs to be burned per hour. While line Firemaking, reduces the time for lighting a log from six ticks to one tick, giving a significant experience per hour improvement. | To recharge: 91 The Firemaker's Curse | ||
| Brawling gloves (Firemaking) | +50 to 75% XP | When worn, provide +50% Firemaking experience. This increases to +75% with the tier 4 of the Infernal Puzzle Box unlocked. They start with up to 1,277 charges, use one charge for each instance of Firemaking experience gained, and degrade to dust once all charges are used. Additional charges will not be consumed but bonus experience will still be given for each log burned via the Pyromaniac perk. | None | ||
| Pyrelord | +10 XP per log | Provides an additional 10 experience when lighting up a fire on the ground. Doesn't work with bonfires. Additionally, gives a +3 Firemaking boost (invisible), increasing the chance to light up a fire on the ground. | 46 | ||
| Phoenix (familiar) | +6 Firemaking boost (invisible) | Gives a +6 Firemaking boost (invisible), increasing the chance to light up a fire on the ground. | 72 | ||
| Forge regent | +10 XP per log | Provides an additional 10 experience when lighting up a fire on the ground. Doesn't work with bonfires. Additionally, gives a +4 Firemaking boost (invisible), increasing the chance to light up a fire on the ground. | 76 | ||

| Scripture of Elidinis | Extra experience granted | Periodically spawn a soul that when caught, grants experience on average to that of a small XP lamp. Experience awarded stacks additively with other generic experience boosts, including outfits. At level 110, this equates to roughly 112k experience per hour. | N/A | ||
Augmented tinderboxes
[edit | edit source]
Players with at least level 22 Invention can discover how to create Pyro-matics. This also unlocks the ability to create augmented crystal tinderboxes by using augmentors on crystal tinderboxes. A tool gizmo may be added to an augmented tinderbox to give it perks. The following perks may be useful to players training Firemaking.

To use an augmented tinderbox's perks the player must have charges in their charge pack. Use of an augmented crystal tinderbox costs at most 0.31 divine charges from the player’s charge pack per second. This cost can be reduced by researching charge drain improvements or by adding the efficient perk to the item.

Levels 1-110
[edit | edit source]This section will show the time and number of logs needed to reach level 110 if switching to each newly unlocked log type as soon as possible, along with the prices of the logs involved. It assumes all logs are burnt on a bonfire to which five or more players are contributing.
Assuming elder logs and eternal magic logs are used, the total cost using the below method will be −425,687,227 coins. If using magic logs instead, the total cost will be −126,865,054 coins.

Alternative methods
[edit | edit source]Killing vyrelords
[edit | edit source]Using the reforged Sunspear, Morytania legs 4, and 500 cremated vyrewatch, vyrelords and vyreladies can be killed in Darkmeyer with either Ranged, Magic, or Melee for around 500k combat experience per hour in chosen style, around 280k Firemaking XP per hour, around 350k Prayer XP per hour, around 90k Farming XP per hour (with seedicide), and around 2.5m coins per hour in drops.
'Accidental' Fletching and Firemaking
[edit | edit source]Prehistoric Potterington's 'Accidental' Fletching and Firemaking is available for players with 82, 87, and 95 Firemaking. Unlike most other Firemaking training methods, it offers a profitable training method, albeit at the cost of increased activity.
- Zygomite Carestyling is semi-AFK, rewarding the player with 249.6 XP as well as 12-15 tempered fungal shafts every five ticks.
- The Seggregation activity rewards the player with 276.4 XP per egg deposited and 12-15 sharp shell shards (detailed below).
- Eggperimentation (on the main island) is very active but rewards the player with 1,057.1 XP and 27-34 dinosaur 'propellant' per Potterington Blend #102 Fertiliser ignited.
Each of these methods gives XP to the augmented crystal tinderbox and pyro-matic and works with the Tinker and Prosper perks. However, the Pyromaniac and Rapid perks do not work, and fire spirits will not spawn.
Sharp shell shards
[edit | edit source]Sharp shell shards are a fairly AFK way to train Firemaking. Players with 87 Firemaking can ignite them (right-click option) to obtain 341.9 base experience every five ticks. This results in a total of 410,000 base Firemaking experience per hour, costing 1.85 coins per XP. Up to 60 shards will be ignited in a row for a 3-minute AFK duration.
Despite granting Firemaking experience, igniting sharp shell shards benefits from the bonus experience granted by a portable fletcher and the tier 3 Ranger's Workroom.
Barbarian Assault
[edit | edit source]Players can gain Firemaking bonus experience as a reward from playing the Barbarian Assault minigame. At level 99 Firemaking, it is possible to gain 3,500,000 bonus experience per hour playing hard mode Barbarian Assault waves 6-9, at a cost of 6 Barbarian assault ticket - hard wave 10 per hour. Players may, as an alternative, gain 2,400,000 bonus experience per hour playing hard mode waves 1-9 without having to pay for the tickets.
In order to play Hard mode Barbarian Assault, the normal mode of the minigame must be completed at least once. It is highly recommended that players reach their maximum role levels before starting to play for bonus experience.
The Book of Char
[edit | edit source]An efficient way to gain experience is by completing the The Book of Char Distraction and Diversion. This can increase the experience rate to 1.6 million per hour. The Book of Char can be used if The Firemaker's Curse has been completed. It will give double the experience for walking over logs, but dropping the logs beforehand is very tedious. A much more efficient way of getting logs lined up on the ground is to fill Beasts of Burden with logs and dismiss them in a line. This allows a player to run continuously over the same line, burning 1 log in each stack of logs at a time, gaining a large amount of exp in the limited time the Book is activated.
Combining Woodcutting and Firemaking
[edit | edit source]Woodcutting and Firemaking can be combined by cutting a backpack of logs, then burning them. This allows simultaneous Woodcutting and Firemaking training without needing to buy supplies and accessing the bank. At lower levels, it is recommended to cut maple trees or acadia trees. The most effective logs for this method at higher Woodcutting levels are mahogany trees. A great location is the mahogany trees in the Hardwood grove. Alternative locations are in the Kharazi Jungle and on Ape Atoll. Using an inferno adze or Always Adze relic power is a good idea. The use of wood spirits will result in both logs being burnt, effectively doubling Firemaking experience. You can expect to get upwards of 500,000 xp an hour at mahogany trees.
Players who have 91 Prayer and have completed the quest The Light Within can use Superheat Form to make combining the two skills far more efficient. Superheat Form instantly burns all logs cut, meaning the player can keep cutting without worrying about inventory management at all, with no decrease to their Woodcutting speed. Using an ancient elven ritual shard to restore prayer points and a grace of the elves to halve the prayer drain from Superheat Form, it becomes possible to stay at a Woodcutting location indefinitely without needing to restock. Alternatively, you can use the Orthen furnace core to negate the prayer drain. Always Adze relic power allows players to gain the benefits of Superheat Form without using prayer points, but must reserve a relic power slot and spend chronotes to activate it.
Logs requiring a higher level than mahogany will result in slower Woodcutting and Firemaking experience rates due to reduced Woodcutting speed.
Curly roots
[edit | edit source]
At level 83 Firemaking, curly roots, which yield 378.5 experience each, can be burned in special firepits found in the Jadinko Lair. They must first be chopped from curly jade roots (not straight jade root) hanging from the ceiling near the slayer monsters there, requiring 83 Woodcutting. Four roots are received for each vine chopped. The vines chop quickly, even at 85 Woodcutting. At the minimum required levels with a ring of fire, players can expect to receive approximately 250,000 Firemaking xp per hour, as well as approximately 23,500 Woodcutting xp. At high levels with full lumberjack clothing, the inferno adze or Always Adze relic power, flame gloves and the ring of fire equipped, players can expect to receive approximately 35,000 Woodcutting experience as well as approximately 305,000 Firemaking experience per hour and over 1,100 Jadinko Favour, making this method the third-best in experience per hour. This method is behind burning magic or elder logs on five-player bonfires with flame gloves and the ring of fire equipped, in terms of experience per hour. However, this method of training Firemaking is free, potentially profitable, and, as with most Firemaking training, semi-afkable. It is also a nice change from burning logs on bonfires all the time.
With the Superheat Form prayer, a player can receive over 670,000 Firemaking experience per hour, making this the best method in-game. The prayer can be sustained without the use of prayer potions by using the ancient elven ritual shard in combination with grace of the elves. However, due to the low drain rate of the prayer, a full inventory of prayer potion can last multiple hours, and prayer renewal can more than counter the drain rate of the prayer at a very low prayer bonus.
However, the Superheat curse prevents players from gaining Jadinko Favour, as it's only gained when the roots are placed into the firepits. In addition, it requires a bit more attention compared to burning logs.
Incense sticks
[edit | edit source]Crafting Incense sticks offers a slower, but sometimes cheaper or more profitable way of training Firemaking. These are made in three stages, each offering different profits/losses and experience rates. Prayer can also be trained by making these, depending on the stages being made.
Having unlocked the Quick-cense upgrade from Sydekix's Shop of Balance significantly speeds up all incense stick crafting processes. Rates per hour with this upgrade unlocked are shown in parentheses in the following tables. Having unlocked the Makes-cense upgrade from the shop grants a 10% chance to make additional incense sticks when adding herbs.
This profitability varies, and the guide prices on Grand Exchange may not be sufficient to determine trading trends, or you may not be able to sell certain items.
Crafting base
[edit | edit source]Crafting the base stick offers a lower experience rate, but requires fewer upfront materials.
