Your hiring manager just asked for a unicorn. Now what? 🦄We've all had that intake meeting. The wish list keeps growing and the perfect candidate starts to sound made up.I recently facilitated a panel with Hiring Assistant users, and so many of their discussions transcended any specific product and spoke to realities many recruiters face. One panelist made a particular point that stuck with me: a role usually isn't niche because of its title. It's niche because a whole stack of requirements all have to show up in one person. Here's how they turn a unicorn into someone they can actually find:🔍 Make it observable. If a requirement can't be seen on a profile or explained clearly, it's hard to search for. Ask: how would someone show this? ✂️ Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Write each qualification on its own, and save your strictest priority settings for the true non-negotiables. 📉 Treat a small talent pool as data, not a failure. It's evidence you can bring back to your hiring m

absolutely agree! 👏 The key is to align expectations with market reality. Separating must-have skills from nice-to-haves helps recruiters find the right talent faster and build stronger partnerships with hiring managers. Sometimes, the perfect candidate isn't the one who checks every box, but the one who delivers the greatest value. 🎯

I’m sure all of you often tell candidates not to judge a job by its title. So why do we sometimes judge candidates by their cover?A list of role requirements is like the cover of a book. It tells you what you're picking up, but it doesn't tell you the story. When we only screen for the exact must-haves, we can put down a great read before we ever open it. The reality is that a candidate is not a Boolean string. They are all complex individuals with so much more to offer than a bulleted list of skills. The best hires are often hiding in the chapters. Next time you review a profile, keep reading:📖 The backstory: stable work history. Steady tenure shows someone who commits, sticks with a team, and grows with the story instead of skipping ahead.📖 The setting: where they've worked. A fast-scaling startup or a complex enterprise shapes skills you won't find in a job description.📖 The plot twist: a career change. A former teacher or hospitality pro can bring exactly the people skills your

You’ve finally extended an offer on a role you’ve been working for weeks. The req is closed, and you have some time before the next one opens. This is the moment many recruiters assume their work inside Recruiter pauses. The most effective talent professionals, however, know the truth. Recruiting doesn’t stop when a req closes; it shifts. The best teams use slower periods to stay proactive, keep pipelines warm, and set themselves up so that when the next req arrives, filling it is dramatically easier. Luckily, Recruiter is equally effective at supporting this type of activity as it is for  your active hiring workflows. If you have downtime between roles, here are a few ways to use Recruiter to do your future self a favor:Refresh a saved search: Titles, skills, and role requirements evolve constantly. Use this time to tweak saved searches so your next req starts with stronger, more relevant results from day one. Leverage search alerts to make new connections: Even if you’re not hiring ri

Overview This panel features Brooke Carlson, @Rachel Murphy, and Carly White exploring how recruiters can use Hiring Assistant to source for highly specialized roles. The conversation focused on translating complex hiring needs into clear qualifications, refining searches through evidence-based feedback, and partnering with hiring managers to understand realistic talent pools.Thank you so much to our panelists for sharing their experiences and expertise and to all of the attendees who showed up to make this event a success! Key Takeaways Define “Niche” as a Combination of ConstraintsA familiar job title can become difficult to fill when several requirements intersect. Effective searches begin by identifying which constraints are essential and which can be treated as preferences or transferable capabilities.Consider sector, project type, technology, materials, credentials, geography, and work arrangement together Distinguish true must-haves from criteria that can be broadened Use tran

I feel like many of us cringe when we hear that a role is “niche” for a variety of reasons. Whether the job is super specialized, the talent pool is exceedingly low, or the role represents the intersection of multiple disciplines, the frustration all boils down to this:Candidates are hard to find. And compounding this problem is the fact that Hiring Assistant doesn’t seem to understand what you are looking for…Uff-da.But not too long ago, the same thing could be said about our Boolean searches.  Finding the perfect placement for parenthesis, the most effective modifiers (is it “AND” or “OR”? “AND” and “OR”???) and of course, keywords were the challenge.  What did we do to get through this?Continuous Testing. You’d tweak one modifier and see how it changed your results. You’d add terminology specific to the industry or skills required for the role and watch the funnel slowly get smaller. You’d put in the work to understand the language of the Boolean string so that it worked for you.So,

At the time of writing this post, I have 23 unread texts on my phone.  For me, that’s actually a huge accomplishment. When my group chats are active, that number can easily exceed 100. Add in my work emails and threads, along with messages from other platforms, and all the sudden we are talking about hundreds of communications that an accrue in just one day. I even view myself as someone who maintains a large social network. If someone like me, who keeps a small circle, can receive so much outreach in one day, I can’t imagine how full the inboxes of extroverts become. With so much noise to navigate, the messages that get replies usually aren’t the longest or the most polished. They will be the ones that respect someone's time and give them a reason to care. Here are some easy tips for ensuring your InMails are the ones that are opened:Lead with the "why you" — one specific, real reason you reached out, not a keyword match Say the hard parts early — location, comp range, and whether it'
