Since 2012, the Centre for the Studies of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) has been investigating the empirical diversity of manuscript cultures from both a historical and comparative perspective, based on material artefacts. The vast majority of its ongoing research projects are organised in the UWA Cluster of Excellence.

EXC Understanding Written Artefacts

‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ is a Cluster of Excellence, a large-scale interdisciplinary research project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Its first funding phase ran from 2019 to 2025; its second funding phase runs from 2026 to 2032.
