D-AF: Statement of the Chair following the earthquake in easter Afghanistan
It is with profound sorrow that I have received the news about the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, particularly in the regions of Kunar and Nangarhar. According to multiple reports, hundreds have lost their lives, with the victim count rising by the minute, and thousands are injured. Entire villages have been severely affected, and rescue efforts are hampered by landslides and difficult mountainous terrain.
As Chair of the Afghanistan delegation in the European Parliament, I extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and our solidarity to all affected communities. We acknowledge and commend the swift mobilisation of the United Nations and its partners on the ground. The confirmed deployment of relief teams to the impacted districts, including the delivery of life-saving assistance with a focus on the most vulnerable, especially children, is vital at this critical time.
I commend the swift response of Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib to mobilize support on the ground and call on Member States to contribute in every possible way they can. The European Union, together with international partners, can and should scale up the humanitarian response. This includes immediate medical care, emergency shelter, safe drinking water, food assistance, and the restoration of essential infrastructure. Particular attention is required to ensure women and girls can access health services, including through the presence of female medical professionals where this is urgently needed. Humanitarian access must be guaranteed without hindrance and in full compliance with international humanitarian law.
The Afghanistan Delegation in the European Parliament will continue to monitor the situation closely and stands ready to work with the European institutions on additional support measures for the hardest-hit communities. In this dark hour, the European Parliament stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Afghanistan.
