On 19 January 2026, the Members of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Members of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs held a joint exchange of views with the Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath on the Justice programme for the period 2028-2034.

The new Justice Programme 2028-2034 will continue supporting a strengthened cooperation in civil and criminal justice across the EU. It is aimed at funding initiatives such as training for judges, prosecutors and other legal professionals, as well as projects that improve the access to justice for citizens and businesses. Its goal is to support a European area of justice built on the rule of law -- including an independent judiciary, mutual trust between Member States, and an effective judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters. Through this work, the programme reinforces democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights across the Union, in line with the Union values enshrined in the Treaties.
