We are writing to share some difficult news. The PIC is deeply heartbroken to share that Rodney Perez, our Career Specialist at Charlestown High School, passed away Monday evening following an accident in Boston. Rodney had been with the PIC since January 2023, though many within the organization have known him considerably longer as he grew up in Boston, attended the Tobin and BCLA, and was a youth leader at Sociedad Latina. Rodney was beloved by his peers, and well respected by the students and staff he worked alongside at Charlestown High School and with partners throughout the Greater Boston community. He had an infectious personality, always bringing positive energy to every interaction. Rodney leaves behind his wife Naomi and his son Hanile, who also attends the Tobin, along with a wider family of loved ones. Rodney impacted the lives of many and served the youth of Boston well. He will be deeply missed. We welcome you to join us in support of his family if you are able: https://lnkd.in/eWkAuYsU . Please keep his family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts.

About us
The Boston Private Industry Council – also known as the PIC – is the city’s workforce development board, appointed by Mayor Michelle Wu, and its school-to-career intermediary organization. The PIC is one of the Commonwealth’s 16 MassHire Workforce Boards. As a nonprofit organization, the PIC hires and deploys front-line staff to work directly with priority populations in order to create a tight loop between policy and practice, continuously informed by data analysis and research. For more than 46 years, the PIC has worked at the intersection of education and workforce development to connect Boston residents to promising career pathways, while creating a diverse talent pipeline for local employers. The PIC convenes business and education, along with government, labor, and community leaders, to align education and workforce development systems, address racial and socioeconomic inequities, and better serve Boston residents and employers.

Another April vacation week, another round of skill-building boot camps ✅ Through support from Amazon and SIM Boston, nearly 90 Boston Public Schools students engaged in hands-on career learning last week. This month’s five boot camps explored a wide variety of topics: Financial Literacy (Salem Five Bank), AI Discovery (MIT RAISE), Biotech (LabCentral), Entrepreneurship (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) with Citizens) and Clean Energy (National Grid). While specific technical skills varied, all boot camps fostered skill growth in communication, public speaking, and networking. Thank you to our partners for providing students with meaningful career exploration opportunities! A special thank you to Amazon, who made these experiences possible.

At English High School, the learning continues long after the final bell rings. 20 students stay on campus to gain real-world skills while supporting their school community as after-school interns in robotics, business, peer tutoring, and more. Thanks to funding by YouthWorks, a state-wide youth employment program managed by Commonwealth Corporation and administered by the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development, these paid opportunities help students build confidence, explore careers, and give back.
