In 2019, several African governments were looking to scale up a self-injectable contraceptive, DMPA-SC, a shot that protects against pregnancy for three months and is simple enough for women to give themselves at home. The evidence was solid, women wanted it, and pilots had already shown it worked. What stood between a promising pilot and a national program was a specific, unglamorous set of gaps: training providers at scale, updating clinical guidelines, integrating the product into supply chains and health information systems — the work that actually embeds a new method into how a country delivers care. That's the gap the Catalytic Opportunity Fund was built to close. Since 2019, COF has funded exactly that kind of catalytic, time-bound work. The DMPA-SC track alone has trained 36,670 providers, making the method available to women across 16 countries. This week, we're celebrating a major milestone in Papua New Guinea: the launch of HPV vaccination, reaching an estimated 60,000 girls aged 9 to 14 in this first phase alone. Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Papua New Guinea— deaths that are almost entirely preventable through vaccination. Led by the Government of Papua New Guinea, the launch brought together national and global health leaders, including Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance CEO Dr. Sania Nishtar, Gavi Chief Country Delivery Officer Thabani Maphosa, Hon. Powes Parkop, Governor for the National Capital District (NCD), Mr. pascoe kase, Secretary for Health, and country representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. For decades, the hormonal IUD was standard care in wealthy countries and unavailable to most women in low- and middle-income countries. Negotiating an affordable price was the first step. But embedding a new product into a government health system takes dedicated, flexible funding. That's the gap the Catalytic Opportunity Fund (COF) was built to close. The COF pools and administers funding from multiple donors, including Gates Foundation, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and MSD for Mothers, in a fast, flexible mechanism to address critical bottlenecks to new and underused SRH products in low- and middle-income countries. On July 17, 2026, Unitaid and CHAI announced new agreements with two leading providers of AI-powered TB screening software. Computer aided detection (CAD) software for TB interprets chest x-rays for signs of TB and identifies those in need of confirmatory TB testing. Under these access agreements, the cost of CAD screening has by reduced by up to 65% for low- and middle-income countries. Reliable blood pressure measurement is the most important screening test in antenatal care — but too many women aren’t monitored between visits. SUPREME-SECURE (funded by Unitaid, led by CHAI with The Aurum Institute, Burnet Institute, Concept Foundation (non-profit) and WACI Health) has launched an open RFP for automated and semi-automated upper arm cuff BP devices, to validate and support affordable, quality-assured products for a community health worker–supported home-monitoring model. Last week, CHAI announced a new agreement with Vista Fortifoods securing the lowest available price for RUTF, the life-saving treatment for severe child malnutrition. This isn't the first time a price cut like this has worked. In 2024, CHAI and the Eleanor Crook Foundation achieved the same 30% reduction through a procurement deal in Ghana. Since then, Ghana has more than doubled the number of malnourished children receiving treatment.
