Cybercrime Programme Office of the Council of Europe (C-PROC) reposted this
🐙 #Octopus Conference happens once every 18 months or so. It's a special event for those of us who are passionate about trying to disrupt/investigate/prosecute cybercrime. 🔴 This year was the first one where I had the privilege of leading the team here at the Council of Europe, after the excellent stewardship which Alexander Seger gave for many years. We had over 450 expert professionals fly in from every corner of the world - 106 countries were represented. 🔴 We educated ourselves about the latest illegal crypto techniques, the new EU eEvidence legislation, disinformation and foreign interference, transnational repression of journalists and human rights defenders, scam compounds as a national security threat (h/t Erin West), cyber-enabled international crimes, nudification and AI generated Child Sexual Abuse Material and AI accelerated token theft. We came up with new ideas and plans for dealing with these terrible crimes. 🔴 We celebrated a new party to the Budapest Convention (h/t Kazakhstan), an imminent ratification of the 2nd Additional Protocol (h/t Dominican Republic) and a new Protocol for the separate Warsaw Convention on asset recovery, which includes crypto. 🔴 We had great support from the private sector, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Revolut, Crystal Intelligence and lightening talk presentations from academics from all over the world. Intergovernmental partner organisations such as the EU Commission, Interpol, Europol, Eurojust, UNODC and World Bank were well represented. Overall, it was a very enriching week and one where we payed respectful tributes to the original drafters of the #Budapest Convention, 25 years ago. I am so lucky I get to do this wonderful job, and even more lucky to work with such a fantastic crew. Happy Octopus week 🎂 to all who celebrate!
