The holidays are a time where people come together, creating space for connection and dialogue. While gatherings can bring joy, they can also surface ideological divides. That is why approaching these moments with empathy and active listening is important. Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine highlight how small, authentic exchanges can build trust and keep conversations constructive: https://plos.io/497JuGV

“Context matters; countries are very different; institutions are very different. The only way an organization from the Global North can really make an impact and to be inclusive is to collaborate.” We are grateful to TCC Africa-Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa) for co-hosting our third convening as part of our #RedefiningPublishing initiative. Together, we explored how research publishing can better support #OpenScience for stakeholders in sub-Saharan Africa and Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The event highlights the unique considerations for research assessment, business model, and publishing reform if these are to be globally relevant, equitable, and sustainable to researchers, funders and institutions in Africa. It is always good to connect and meet with the research community 👋 Great to see Joseph Pold, our Journal Development Manager, representing PLOS at Complex Networks and their Applications, staying close to the communities we serve and the conversations shaping the field. This conference holds special significance as it is where our journal, PLOS Complex Systems, first opened for submissions in 2023. Back from Complex Networks and their Applications in frosty Binghamton, NY! This is a special event for me as it's where we first opened for submissions back in 2023 (which feels like a long time ago now). It was also the first time I was able to meet my friend and PLOS Complex Systems Editor-in-Chief, Hocine Cherifi, in person. The French Riviera was a nice backdrop too. This was the conference's 14th year, and, as it moves squarely into its teenage years, I look forward to seeing where we go next. Some highlights from this year include: -A keynote from Section Editor Kimberly Glass on networks and precision medicine -Ranging conversation on the history of science awards with Section Editor Luis Rocha and Luis Bettencourt -The opportunity to present to young scientists about tips/tricks on getting a paper to peer review
