About us
Takeout 25 was started in November 2020 in response to the pandemic that induced helplessness and hopelessness in the people and businesses of Oak Park IL. It started with a simple math equation to arrive at a specific ask of community members to support their local food establishments that form the backbone of the local economy. 10,000 residents spending $25 a week on local takeout creates $1 million a month in takeout business. This provides the approximately 100 restaurants in Oak Park an average monthly income of $10,000 each to cover basic operational costs to survive the pandemic. The mission was to help local restaurants survive the pandemic while keeping the community safe during the pandemic. Takeout 25 now includes Oak Park and it’s neighboring communities to the west of Chicago. Takeout 25 is now a community of over 13,000 members and a network of 100 restaurants. In addition to bringing the community together, Takeout 25 has saved local jobs and business by generating over $15 million in incremental business activity. This impact prompted us to expand the Takeout 25 mission and launch it as a not for profit in September 2021—which happens to be hunger action month. The Takeout 25 NFP mission now includes addressing food insecurity/food waste and sustainability of local food systems in addition to innovative ways to strengthen the local economy/community. The values we hold dear in the pursuit of this mission are positivity, community focus, impact, innovation and sustainability.

Takeout 25 NFP restaurant owners/managers meet-up brings local restaurant owners and managers together in-person twice a year to discuss priorities for collective action. Takeout 25 turns 5 next month and this weeks meet-up focused on what we celebrated our colllective impact these past 5 years and focused on what we can accomplish together the next 5 years. We will leverage partnerships, technology, data and sustainability to deliver even more value to independent restaurants and the local economy overall. We also acknowledged the challenges and headwinds that we are experiencing and expect to experience over the coming months. We also started the conversation about meaningful ways to respond to these challenges. Thank you to all our partners and participating restaurants for a lively and meaningful dialogue. Please do check it out. #takeout25 ABSTRACT This study examines how Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles — anticipation, reflection, inclusion, and responsiveness — enhance social entrepreneurship processes addressing societal challenges. Using qualitative multiple case study analysis of three social enterprises (RVA Works, Takeout 25, and Rebecca's Natural Foods), we explore RRI application across key stages: idea generation, impact measurement, financial sustainability, and scaling. The findings reveal that while social entrepreneurs intuitively incorporate some RRI elements, systematic application of all four principles provides structured approaches to ethical, inclusive, and sustainable dimensions often overlooked. The study contributes theoretically by (1) bridging RRI and social entrepreneurship, demonstrating how principles enhance each process stage; and (2) advancing understanding of user-centered social innovation through inclusivity-driven systemic change. Our framework offers entrepreneurs a practical roadmap for developing responsible innovations that increase social impact and long-term viability.
