About us

The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Our vision is to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet. We are not a bank in the common sense; we are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 189 member countries: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). Each institution plays a different but collaborative role in advancing the vision of inclusive and sustainable globalization. The IBRD aims to reduce poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries, while IDA focuses on the world's poorest countries. Their work is complemented by that of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Together, we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants to developing countries for a wide array of purposes that include investments in education, health, public administration, infrastructure, financial and private sector development, agriculture and environmental and natural resource management.

  • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀? The Amazon is home to 47 million people and 10% of the world’s known biodiversity. But forest loss is putting ecosystems and the livelihoods that depend on them under growing pressure. At its core, conservation is also an economic challenge: creating sustainable livelihoods that make protecting forests viable for local communities. For the past decade, the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes (ASL) program has brought governments, communities, development partners, and technical organizations together to connect conservation with inclusive economic opportunities. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: ✅ 7.4 million hectares of protected and conserved areas created or expanded ✅ 68.5 million hectares of protected areas under improved management ✅ 2.1 million hectares under sustainable management practices ✅ 36,200+ direct beneficiaries, more than 40% women ✅ 60+ community bioeconomy initiatives spanning agroforestry, fisheries, non-timber forest products, and nature-based tourism ✅ 17,800+ hectares of forest restoration generating jobs in nurseries, planting, and maintenance, with women holding up to 60% of jobs in some activities The next step is to scale what works. Through The World Bank Group’s Amazonia Viva initiative, efforts are expanding bioeconomy value chains and nature-based tourism, with an ambition to generate 100,000 jobs by 2030 and mobilize more than $3 billion in public and private investment across the region. The lesson is clear: lasting conservation depends not only on protecting ecosystems, but also on creating economic opportunities for the people who depend on them. • For decades, the International Development Association (IDA) has helped countries invest in people and infrastructure, improving lives and creating jobs for millions around the world. Today marks an important milestone in IDA's evolution as a capital markets issuer. IDA priced its inaugural SEC-exempt U.S. dollar global bond, broadening access to a wider range of U.S. investors and strengthening its ability to mobilize private sector capital in support of development impact in the world's lowest-income countries. This transaction helps connect private capital with development impact at scale, supporting IDA's mission and expanding the resources available to help countries invest in people, infrastructure, and economic opportunity. https://lnkd.in/gG7Vu7vF

WASHINGTON, DC, September 15, 2026 - The International Development Association (IDA, Aaa/AAA), member of the World Bank Group, today priced a USD 3 billion 5-year global benchmark that matures on September 25, 2031 following the US statutory approval recognizing IDA securities as “exempted securities” under US federal securities laws. Over the past several months, The World Bank Group Treasury (IBRD•IDA•IFC) has had the opportunity to meet with investors across the United States and beyond to discuss this important milestone in IDA's 8-year-old funding program: its inaugural SEC-exempt bond, bringing IDA fully in line with its Washington-based multilateral development bank peers. One message came through clearly: investors are eager to learn more about IDA, its mission, and its growing role in global capital markets. While IDA has already firmly established itself in the capital markets as a global issuer, the SEC-exempt format opens the door to broader investor participation. And because development challenges require scale, expanding access to investors is a win for both capital markets and development. https://lnkd.in/eWRC8sPf #IDA #InvestingForImpact #CapitalMarkets #Development

WE'RE HAVING A HACKATHON. AND YOU'RE INVITED. More than 2 billion people remain offline. Yet AI is increasingly shaping how people access information, services, and economic opportunity. The question is not just what AI can do, but how it can work in places with limited connectivity, local languages, and real-world constraints. The World Bank Group is inviting young innovators aged 18-35 to take part in the Small AI for Development Hackathon Challenge, building practical solutions for challenges in agriculture, health, and tourism. The hackathon is powered by Hack-Nation, who are running the full competition from applications through to the finalist selection. Winning teams will travel to Seoul (all expense paid) to present their ideas at the Global AI & Digital Summit 2026. Applications are open through September 26. • 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿?   As fiscal pressures grow across emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), the new report 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗔 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 explores how countries can strengthen tax systems to raise revenue more effectively while supporting growth and protecting vulnerable households.    The report highlights four key messages:    ➡️ 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀. Tax revenues have remained largely unchanged even as fiscal pressures have intensified, while exemptions, loopholes, and narrow tax bases limit the effectiveness of many systems.  ➡️ 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲-𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. Many countries have room to improve both simultaneously by simplifying tax rules and reducing poorly targeted exemptions.  ➡️ 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. Together, these "3Ts" can improve administration, increase compliance, reduce opportunities for avoidance and evasion, and help countries move toward better outcomes.  ➡️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀-𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺. Countries face different constraints and opportunities. The report proposes four reform pathways to help governments identify priorities that fit their circumstances and stage of development.    Read the report: https://lnkd.in/edCC8qiP
