Saturday is International Day of Education! Quality education is not a luxury — it is a fundamental human right. It has the power to transform lives, enabling people to reach their full potential and break free from poverty, inequality and discrimination. Yet a staggering 272 million children and young people worldwide still lack access to education due to poverty, discrimination, conflict, displacement and disasters. UN Secretary-General António Guterres is calling on world leaders to listen to young people and act on their demands for access to equitable, quality education. Saturday is the International Day of Education. Education is a human right. Yet, in many countries, young women and girls continue to face discrimination and marginalization when it comes to accessing education. To achieve a better future for all, we must ensure inclusive access to quality education.

“The violent repression of the Iranian people does not solve any of the country’s problems. On the contrary, it creates conditions for further human rights violations, instability and bloodshed.” In a special session of the Human Rights Council at United Nations Office at Geneva on Friday, United Nations Human Rights chief Volker Türk urged the Iranian authorities to end the repression, release those arbitrarily detained, stop executions, restore communications access and ensure accountability. “My most fervent wish is for this crisis to become a turning point for change that puts the rights, aspirations and needs of the Iranian people first,” he stressed.
