Metasomatic zone on the Southern periphery of alkali-syenite massif. Partially covered by basalt flows of Tertiary age. Located in 5 km NEE from city Phenggan (Pyonggang).
The study area, the Apdong Nb-Ta deposit, is in Pyeonggang-gun, Gangwon-do, North Korea, and mainly comprises alkali syenite, biotite granite, and basalt. The alkali syenite body occurs in an eastโ€“west trending ellipsoidal shape with a length of 7โ€“8 km, a width of 2โ€“3 km, and an area of 15 km2. It is intruded by Jurassic biotite granite in the east and covered by Quaternary basalt in the south and north. Based on its predominant mineral constituents and metasomatic alteration, this syenite body is further subdivided into seven zones, i.e., alkali hornblende syenite zone, biotite syenite zone, nepheline syenite zone, feldspar rich Na-metasomatized zone, porphyritic pyrite-feldspar rich Na-metasomatized zone, pyrite-feldspar rich Na-metasomatized zone, and silicified zone by the metasomatic alterations. Mineralization occurred during the post-magmatic metasomatic alteration immediately after the emplacement of syenite, and the major ore bodies were distributed in the northern (Apdong deposit) and southern (Haebang deposit) margins of the alkali syenite. Kang suggested that the trace metals and REE mineralization stages can be summarized as follows: 1) alkali hornblende and Na-feldspar metasomatism: zircon and partly pyrochlore mineralizations, 2) Na-Fe pyroxene and Na-feldspar metasomatism: intensive mineralization of zircon and pyrochlore, 3) Na-feldspar metasomatism: recrystallization of zircon and pyrochlore, 4) silicified stage: recrystallization of pyrochlore and zircon and REE mineralizations forming columbite, fersmite, fergusonite, xenotime, and monazite. The mineralized syenite mainly consists of quartz, feldspar, pyroxene, hornblende, and biotite subordinate with pyrochlore, zircon, etc. The major ore-minerals are pyrochlore and zircon. The proven reserve of the Apdong deposit is 1.1 billion tons with 0.13% of Nb2O5. The concentrated samples mainly consist of pyrochlore (78.33 wt%), fergusonite (15.16 wt%), zircon (1.84 wt%), ilmenite (1.29 wt%) subordinate with quartz (0.63 wt%), aegirine (0.61 wt%), sanidine (0.55 wt%), microcline (0.44 wt%), sphene (0.25 wt%), and magnetite (0.15 wt%). Numerous mineralized syenite samples were collected in the southern part of the Mt. Hoam syenite by the South and North Korean joint investigation in 2007. The concentrated sample was prepared by mineral beneficiation using traditional crushing, pulverizing, gravity, flotation, and magnetic separation after the joint investigation.
