A composite intrusion consisting of early alkaline rocks, mainly aegirine syenite, and late alkaline granite. The intrusion has the shape of an irregular lens, which extends 15 km form north to south in a SSE direction and is 1.5-4 km wide from east to west.
Located on the west bank of the Anning river, west of Xichang.
The Taihe intrusion covers an exposed area of approximately 13 km2, and is ∼ 3 km in length and ∼ 2 km in width. The lithologic layers dip southeastward at angles ranging from 50° to 60° and the overall thickness is about 1.2 km. Based on differences in mineral composition and textural relationships, the intrusion is classified into three main lithological zones: the Lower Zone (LZ), Middle Zone (MZ), and Upper Zone (UZ). The LZ, from base upward, consists of olivine clinopyroxenite, olivine gabbro, gabbro, and massive Fe-Ti oxide ore. The massive Fe-Ti oxide ores are composed of 50–90 vol% Fe-Ti oxides, with silicate minerals making up 10–50 vol%. The MZ consists of six distinct cyclic units (Cycles I-VI) according to the rhythmic variations of Fe-Ti oxide contents. The UZ predominantly consists of apatite gabbro, which features a thin interbedded layer of apatite clinopyroxenite.
There is a giant Fe-Ti-V-magnetite deposit located within the middle zone of the gabbro intrusion.
