What is the State of the Union?

In September each year, the President of the European Commission delivers the State of the Union address to the European Parliament. This is an opportunity to share her vision for the EU, take stock of achievements and to announce major upcoming initiatives.

In her State of the Union speech on 10 September 2025, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen shared the key priorities and flagship projects for the year to come, building on the progress the EU has made in recent years.

Letter of intent

President von der Leyen sent a Letter of Intent to Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, which holds the Presidency of the Council. In it, she detailed the actions the Commission intended to take in the following year by means of legislation and other initiatives.

First year in office

Since December 2024, the new European Commission has focused on making Europe stronger and more resilient. It has boosted the economy, invested in skills and housing, and supported innovation in areas like clean tech and artificial intelligence. At the same time, the EU has deepened global partnerships, taking more responsibility for its own defence, and standing firmly with Ukraine.
