Podcast: innovation through collaboration with academia

In the latest episode of Eurostat’s Stats in a Wrap podcast we investigate how partnering with academia drives statistical innovation that makes data gathering smarter, faster and more effective.

In this episode, host Jonathan Elliot is joined by Eurostat’s Aleksandra Bujnowska, who works on statistical confidentiality and access to microdata; Sofia Rodrigues, who leads collection and management of business and administrative data at Statistics Portugal; and Peter Lugtig, professor at Utrecht University and senior researcher at Statistics Netherlands, specialising in data quality and survey methods.

Our guests reveal how collaboration between universities and statistical institutes in EU countries is transforming the way data are collected and processed. From using smartphones to simplify surveys to utilising AI for faster analysis and error detection, innovation is reshaping official statistics. Partnership with academia addresses key challenges in the field, ensuring that Eurostat’s data keep up with the rapid changes in our societies. At the same time, the partnership looks ahead, by preparing new generations of expert statisticians through the European Master in Official Statistics network.
