This week experts from government, academia, international organisations, business and civil society gathered at the 2026 OECD Blue Sky Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation Data and Indicators to discuss how we can better measure progress in science and innovation. Where are tomorrow's scientists and innovators being trained? Launched this week at the #OECD Blue Sky Forum, our latest Research and Innovation Careers Observatory report provides insights on the people who drive research and innovation forward. Some key findings include: ➡️ Demand for STI talent is rising fast. Science and engineering professionals grew from 3.2% to 3.7% of total employment across OECD countries between 2015 and 2024. ➡️Talent pipelines remain strong. OECD countries awarded over 300,000 new doctoral degrees and 3.9 million master's degrees in 2023. ➡️Close to 480,000 doctorates and over 7 million master's degrees were awarded in 2023 across the OECD, as well as OECD accession, partner and EU countries. ➡️Talent is concentrated in a few hubs: the EU, China, India, the UK and the US. Together, these five areas account for 70% of doctoral graduates and over 80% of master's graduates across OECD and EU member, accession and partner economies. As countries compete for research talent, understanding where researchers and scientists are being trained and where they are going next will be key to shaping policies on mobility and career development. 🔗 https://brnw.ch/21x5OtY

Another pandemic is not a question of if, but when. Without effective action, a future pandemic could cause GDP to fall by up to 16.2% in just nine months, new OECD modelling across 51 countries shows. But acting early matters. A layered approach with measures such as hand hygiene, masks, ventilation, voluntary quarantine teleworking and domestic travel restrictions could prevent vast majority of deaths, while limiting the economic damage to around 2.5% of GDP. Relying on lockdowns as a last resort, without earlier preventive measures, is both less effective at saving lives and more damaging to the economy. Today is International #EqualPayDay. Women working full time across OECD countries still earn, on average, only 90 cents for every dollar or euro earned by men, reflecting a gender wage gap of around 10%. At the current pace of change, achieving equal pay could still take decades. Behind the discussions on the competitiveness of the European automotive sector, the transition to electric vehicles, changing consumer preferences, and competition from China, there are people and jobs. With more than 6 million workers directly employed in the EU automotive sector, the scale of the transition is anything but negligible. Together with Alexander Hijzen, Andrea Hofer and Alina Winter, we have brought together a wide range of data to measure the scale of the challenge, not only for the headline-making vehicle manufacturers, but also for suppliers and related industries.
