More than 75% of surveyed teachers from 23 European Union countries have encountered antisemitic incidents between students in their classroom. Over a quarter of teachers have witnessed nine or more of such incidents. These alarming findings come from a new UNESCO survey, “Addressing antisemitism through education: A survey of teachers’ knowledge and understanding”, released on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. The survey also reveals alarmingly high levels of Holocaust denial surfacing in classrooms, as well as physical violence against Jewish students. To counter antisemitism and all other forms of hate in education and beyond, there is an urgent need for teacher training, clear policy guidance, and effective responses on the ground. #UNESCO is committed to supporting education systems in this effort. The survey was developed by UCL Centre for Holocaust Education in partnership with the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), Public First and with the support of the European Commission and European ministries of education.

Today is the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. It reminds us of our duty to remember the six million victims, to educate people about the history of the genocide, and to combat antisemitism. UNESCO is the UN agency specifically mandated to promote Holocaust and genocide education. We work with strategic partners to develop values to prevent future atrocities. In the era of the internet, AI, and social media, denial and distortion of history is prevalent than ever. We can counter this through #education and create a future where hate has no place. UNESCO works to promote cooperation between states. More than ever, we need an effective multilateral system #ForThePeople, and this cannot be achieved without #women’s representation and leadership. While women are half of the population, they represent only a small fraction of global decision-makers. They remain too often excluded from the spaces where peace is negotiated, budgets are decided, and global norms are shaped. As we mark the International Day of Women in Multilateralism, we are reminder of the urgent need to increase women’s representation in key decision-making positions that shape and implement multilateral agendas. UNESCO and its partners work to reduce inequalities in and through education, empowering women in science and technology for environmental action, promoting inclusion, and tackling gender-based violence. From bridging the digital gender divide to supporting women in crisis and recovery contexts, this work aims to create lasting change. Youth are not just beneficiaries of #Education – they are co-creators of its future. As the first United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Youth, Felipe Paullier Olivera shares how putting young people at the centre of education policy builds more inclusive, relevant and resilient systems. From music and languages to knowledge systems and artistic expression, African and Afrodescendant cultures are a living force. They shape identities, connect generations and contribute directly to dialogue, peace and sustainable development. Every year on 24 January, the World Day for African and Afrodescendant Culture is a moment to recognise this shared heritage, across Africa and throughout its diasporas. This heritage is also profoundly youthful. Africa is the youngest continent in the world, with more than 60% of its population under the age of 25. Across the continent and beyond, young people are carrying culture forward, safeguarding traditions, reimagining practices and using creativity to strengthen social cohesion. For UNESCO, this dynamic lies at the heart of its mandate. With #PriorityAfrica guiding its action, the Organization works to ensure that young people are not only custodians of heritage, but active creators shaping its future. On this International Day of Education, #UNESCO is calling for the meaningful inclusion of youth in global decision making in education. Although progress has been made, too often young people remain excluded from decisions that shape their education and opportunities. Their voices matter — not as passive beneficiaries, but as true partners. Their leadership is essential. Because education systems are strongest when they are shaped with those they serve, Starting this year, UNESCO is giving youth a voice in decision-making bodies, such as the SDG 4 Education 2030 High-Level Steering Committee, where they can contribute to global education policy. #EducationDay #LeadingSDG4

Young people under 30 make up more than half of the world’s population and are central to the future of education systems. Yet their role in shaping education policy remains limited. Only 1 in 3 governments has formal mechanisms to involve youth and students in education policymaking. The GEM Report UNESCO's 2026 Youth Report, Lead with youth, co-published with the United Nations Youth Office, links this gap to ongoing challenges in policy relevance, equity and public trust. When youth perspectives are absent, education policies risk missing the realities of learners and future workers. Around half of EU citizens find it difficult to distinguish between reliable information and disinformation about climate change on social media. That’s according to the latest Eurobarometre survey – and it should make us stop and think. We’re living in a world where the threat of climate change is becoming ever more urgent and, at the same time, where alternative truths, confrontation and disinformation abound. This is cause for concern. Informed public debates where we listen and look at the science are so essential if humanity is going to effectively tackle the climate crisis. This is why the EU is endorsing the Declaration on Information Integrity on Climate Change launched at COP30. The Commission and the Member States are ready to take on climate disinformation and work together with international partners to address it. It’s good to see this moving forward. Youth under 30 make up more than half of the world’s population. They are driving innovation, social change and sustainable development. UNESCO is advancing global education and driving results not only for, but with, young people. For #EducationDay, UNESCO brought together leaders, partners, such as the Global Partnership for Education, and young people around a shared message: education works best when youth are not only heard, but empowered as co-creators. ➡️ Opening reflections by Director-General Khaled El-Enany Ezz and Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, set the tone for a day focused on youth leadership and collective action. 💬 A fireside chat with youth leaders and partners explored how young people can help shape education decision-making, from classrooms to global policy tables. 📚 The day also marked the launch of the 2026 GEM Report UNESCO Youth Report: Lead with youth, calling for young people to be embedded as partners in education systems at every level. Education is stronger when shaped by youth leadership. The future of education must be built with them. https://lnkd.in/dQxcCTgz
