🇰🇪It’s a wrap! The 2025 TWAS Skill Building Workshop in Nairobi has come to a close, but the ideas, lessons learned, and the new partnerships and friendships formed will stay with us for a long time! 🎙️“It was an incredible opportunity to enhance my scientific skills and connect with like-minded researchers from across the continent. The session on responsible AI was particularly enlightening, and I look forward to applying the insights I gained to my own research," said abdirahman elmi, a participant in the workshop. 🌍 He was one of 28 early-career scientists from across Africa, all supported by the Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI) Programme, with generous backing from Germany’s Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMFTR). We look forward to seeing the future collaborations that will emerge from this experience and how they will help strengthen the scientific capacity of African countries✨

TWAS - The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries – works to advance sustainable development through research, education, policy and diplomacy. The Academy was founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world, under the leadership of Abdus Salam, the Pakistani physicist and Nobel Prize winner. Today, UNESCO-TWAS has approximately 1,400 elected Fellows from more than 90 countries; 11 of them are Nobel laureates. Through more than three decades, TWAS mission has remained consistent: • Recognize, support and promote excellence in scientific research in the developing world; • Respond to the needs of young scientists in countries that are lagging in science and technology; • Promote South-South and South-North cooperation in science, technology and innovation; • Encourage scientific research and sharing of experiences in solving major problems facing developing countries. TWAS, based in Trieste, Italy, receives core funding from the Government of Italy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) administers TWAS funds and personnel.

Science diplomacy is more than an idea, it’s a practice. And so aspiring science diplomats need more than lessons in the field, but also experience in how science diplomacy works in actions. This is why the AAAS-TWAS Course on Science Diplomacy features simulations in which course participants take on a role in a fictionalized, but common, negotiations between differing interests in which science is central.
