Bookcases are built in a player-owned house using the Construction skill. Bookcases can be built in the parlour, quest hall, or study of the house. Bookcases can also be found in various houses in RuneScape.

There are 3 types of bookcases which can be built in the bookcase hotspot:

All of the bookcases will contain the same books. Bookcases have the ability to save bank space, because they automatically contain most books from previously completed quests and other miscellaneous books found in RuneScape. Players do not need to fetch these books from the bank to store them in their bookcase(s).

Even if you obtain a book, a quest might have to be completed in order to find the book in your bookcase. For example, The great divide requires the completion of Mourning's End Part I to be stored.

• hidden 11 July 2022 (Update):
  • The number of books that can be displayed on the player-owned house bookcase interface has been increased, up from 256.

• ninja 28 August 2018 (Update):
  • Fairy dossier (Fairy Tale 3), Economy building for dummies (Do No Evil), Philipe's note (Carnillean Rising), Ballad (Spirits of the Elid), Dusty scroll (In Aid of the Myreque), Ransom letter (Some Like It Cold), Report (Within the Light) are now reclaimable from this bookcase.

• patch 6 August 2018 (Update):
  • The Clan avatars for members and Clan avatars for avatar wardens books are no longer available from this bookcase.

• hotfix 3 July 2017 (Update):
  • The Magister's lore books now appear in a player-owned house bookcase correctly.

• patch 7 March 2016 (Update):
  • Players can now store and reclaim the following books from a Player-owned House bookshelf: Ancient Tarddian Journal, Weathered Tarddian Journal, Dusty Tarddian Journal

• patch 17 June 2013 (Update):
  • Players can now store book of the gods in a Player Owned House bookcase.

• patch 21 August 2012 (Update):
  • The Clan Avatar handbooks have been added to player's bookcases in their Player Owned House.

• patch 9 August 2011 (Update):
  • Avalani's Citadel handbooks are now stored in this bookcase.

• patch 8 March 2011 (Update):
  • Trying to retrieve the ragged book from Elemental Workshop III from these bookcases now gives you the correct book.
