The Challenge System is a system intended to suggest skill training methods to players. Daily Challenges can be accessed using the third tab in the Adventures interface, labelled "Challenges".

Basic challenges

[edit | edit source]

Before players gain access to the daily challenges, they must complete a set of seven basic challenges. These challenges are an introduction to the daily challenges system and grant no experience rewards. All can be completed in Burthorpe.

These can be skipped by speaking to the Challenge Mistress Fara in Burthorpe. Skipping these will not grant experience.

Unlike daily challenges, basic challenges will auto-repopulate the Challenge systems tab until all seven are completed. At that point, basic challenges will no longer be available and daily challenges will appear.

Daily challenges

[edit | edit source]

Mechanics

[edit | edit source]
The challenge tab of the Adventures interface

Three daily challenges are assigned to the player each day. These expire at the end of each day before being replaced by three more. The skill of the challenge can be different each day and for each player. Daily challenges are active by default, meaning that the challenge system tracks their progress without the player having to toggle anything. Completing each challenge awards the player with experience equivalent to a large XP lamp in the skill of the challenge. Free-to-play players only get 75% of the experience.

This repeatable content has a soft reset.
The next period's content will become available only once a player has logged out and in.

The first time a player logs in each day after the daily reset at 00:00 UTC, they receive several messages, appearing in their chatbox and containing summaries of their active challenges (for example: New Daily Challenge: Prayer - Daily Prayer (0 / 25)). These messages are not filterable but can be hidden with Sign-in Messages settings, found in the Notification section of the Gameplay settings. Players can check the details of their active daily challenges by clicking on the third tab from the left in the "Adventures" interface.

Additionally, it is possible to have at most one challenge active at a time for a specific skill. An exception to this is when fewer than three challenges are toggled on. In that case duplicates of unblocked challenges will be rolled, making it possible to have multiple challenges for a given skill. One action can progress multiple challenges, meaning that if the player has for instance two Summoning challenges to infuse three pouches each, infusing six at once completes both of these challenges. Each point of progress is only counted for one of the challenges, so infusing only three pouches would only complete the first of the challenges.

Divine locations will not count for daily challenges in gathering skills.

Rewards

[edit | edit source]

After completing a daily challenge, players can open the Challenges interface and click the "Claim Rewards" button. Members will be awarded experience equal to that of a large XP lamp in the skill related to the challenge, whereas free-to-play players will only get 75% of the experience.

For combat which has multiple skills, players will be given a Challenge XP Lamp to choose which experience: Constitution, Magic, Ranged, Attack, Defence, Strength, or Necromancy.

Experience to be received is determined by the level when the challenge was assigned, not when it is completed. The experience earned does not take into account the skill's virtual level. The following tables show the experience received from completing a challenge for any given skill level:

Players can also talk to Challenge Mistress Fara in Burthorpe just south of the bank chest, Challenge Mistress Rashida in the centre of the Menaphos Plaza near the lodestone, or Challenge Mistress Heriau in the Max Guild to receive the reward.

The reward experience amount is calculated at the moment when the challenge is received, not when completed or claimed. If a member's first login of the day is to a free-to-play world and they receive a challenge in a members' skill, the reward will be limited to the maximum F2P level in that skill.

Players will not receive a reward for a completed challenge if it is allowed to expire before the reward is claimed.

Influencing assigned daily challenges

[edit | edit source]

By talking to Challenge Mistress Fara, Rashida, or Heriau, players may choose to block receiving new challenges in any skills that they have achieved skill mastery in. Non-members may block members' skills at level 5 (with the exception of 20 for Archaeology). Additionally, all challenges in combat skills can be completely disabled if players do not wish to gain combat experience, even if the combat skills are not maxed.

Each skill has its own toggle, so players can choose to block some skills while keeping others assignable. Blocking a skill will not remove challenges for that skill that have already been assigned. Members can take advantage of the level 5 (or 20) "max" in free-to-play to block out challenges from certain members' only skills. This is done by logging into a free-to-play world before reset and blocking the undesired members' skill. After 00:00 in game time, players must log back in to a free-to-play world to receive challenges with the new restrictions. Logging back into a members' world will unblock challenges for all skills not at 99.

The challenge toggle interface. Blockable (i.e. maxed) skills are outlined in silver, unblockable (i.e. not maxed) skills are outlined in gold. Currently blocked skills are crossed out.

If one or two challenges are toggled on, duplicates of unblocked challenges will be rolled. If no challenges are toggled on, challenges won't be given at all.

Returner Challenges

[edit | edit source]

Returner challenges were added on 20 March 2023, and are made available to players who return to the game after having been away for a time. These returner challenges are available until all 7 Returner Reward Chests have been claimed, or until 20 days have passed since the player first logged in. Returner challenges are not random, but are instead given out in a fixed order. Completed challenges are replaced by new ones every day at 00:00 in game time, while incomplete challenges are not affected.

Rewards

[edit | edit source]

The only reward for completing a Returner Challenge is progress towards a set of progress rewards, which work much like the weekly rewards available from daily challenges. Like weekly rewards, there are seven tiers of rewards available, each being unlocked by completing three challenges. Unlike weekly rewards, this reward track is not replaced each week, but remains until all seven rewards have been claimed or 20 days have passed.

Development history

[edit | edit source]

The Challenge System was released on 19 September 2012 and first reworked on 16 December 2019, subsequently being reworked again on 15 November 2021, adding a Weekly Reward Track.

On 4 September 2023, Hero Pass update, the challenge system was replaced with Hero Pass. The removal of challenges was reversed a month later on 9 October 2023.

Until an update, players could receive a "Lucky Challenge".

Lucky challenges

[edit | edit source]

Lucky challenges were members-only rare daily events that could occur while completing activities in game. These challenges could be gained from a range of actions including completing a quest, sending out a voyage in Player-Owned Ports, or training a skill. It was possible to receive a lucky challenge for a skill even if it has been toggled off by speaking to Challenge Mistress Fara or Heriau after achieving level 99 in that skill. If a lucky challenge was received, the player will be notified by a pop-up interface in-game (see an example picture on the right). This interface will contain details of what the challenge requires the player to do. Additionally a message will be displayed in the player's chatbox notifying them that they have received a lucky challenge, for example:

You've been given a Lucky Challenge: Magic Logs 0/30
Check the Challenges interface to find out more information.

Only one lucky challenge could be received daily (the day begins at 00:00 UTC). It could take some hours of activity to get one, so an active player can enjoy lucky challenges every day. A lucky challenge had a limited duration of 24 hours. The player could have at most one lucky challenge at once. It was possible, in the span of one day, to complete (and hand in) a lucky challenge of the previous day, and then receive a new lucky challenge.

Lucky challenge would appear in the list of daily challenges in the Challenges tab of the Adventures interface, but could be distinguished from them by the clover icon, or , instead of the star, by duration being measured in hours instead of days, and by the prefix "Lucky Challenge:" in the challenge name. Lucky challenges could not be rerolled nor extended.

Like daily challenges, completed lucky challenges could be handed in to the challenge mistresses. For this, the player will be rewarded with experience in the relevant skill; the same amount of experience that would be given for a completed daily challenge. Unlike daily challenges, lucky challenges did not award the player with a key for Treasure Hunter (until the removal of Treasure Hunter). It was possible to do daily challenge and lucky challenge at the same time.

Weekly progress

[edit | edit source]

Before the DailyScape Overhaul on 16 March 2026, claiming rewards from a completed daily challenge earned progression for the Weekly Progress bar, which reset on Wednesday at 00:00 in game time. There were seven tiers of Weekly Reward Chests to unlock each week. It took three challenges for each unlock, but challenges extended with vis wax counted as double. The Weekly Rewards interface could be opened at any time by clicking on one of the Weekly Reward Chests in the challenges interface. From the Weekly Rewards interface all of the unlocked rewards could be collected at once.

RuneScape members received the rewards from both the member and free-to-play reward pools, while non-members got only the free-to-play rewards. Ironman players had the restricted rewards replaced with coins.

The members' rewards cycled through the following eight sets of weekly rewards in order, before starting over. Breaking your Daily Challenge streak did not affect the order of the rewards.

Rerolls and extensions

[edit | edit source]

Until the DailyScape Overhaul on 16 March 2026, members could reroll or extend daily challenges from the Challenges tab using vis wax. A reroll cost 10 wax (worth 27,860 coins) and an extension cost 25 (worth 69,650 coins).

An extended challenge would be doubled in length, and the player would receive double the experience reward and Weekly Progress. A challenge could be extended after progressing on it or even after completing it as long as it had not been handed in. Two challenge tokens were required to complete an extended daily challenge.

When a challenge was rerolled, the player would be given a choice between the original challenge and a random new one. The original challenge could be kept, but the vis wax would not be refunded. Challenges could be rerolled as many times as you like.

If an extended challenge was rerolled, the new challenge would not be extended. If the original challenge was kept it would still be extended. The random new challenge could be extended, as extending the original challenge did not count if the new challenge is chosen. If the new challenge was chosen, the vis wax for extending the original challenge would not be refunded.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The Challenge System was actually only partially available to free players in that they can still be assigned challenges in members' skills, which they aren't permitted to do or hand in. However, in an update on 22 August 2016, this was changed so that free players can no longer receive Daily Challenges in members' skills. Daily Challenges in members skills were once again made available to free players in December 2017, but an update in January 2018 allowed free players to disable such challenges if they have reached the level 5 cap.
  • Previously, it was possible (and even likely) for free players to receive members-only items as rewards from challenge mystery bags. Fortunately, free players were now able to sell members items. Alternatively, free players can simply bank members' items, as they will not take up free-to-play bank space. With the removal of challenge mystery bags, this no longer occurs.
  • If a completed challenge expires before a log in, the message that you have a complete challenge to hand in will still be displayed.
  • Prior the Leagues update from 15 September 2025, cooking several kinds of raw meat and fish counted towards the Cooking challenge that no longer do. It is unknown if this is intentional.
  • Even after the weekly rewards were removed with DailyScape Overhaul update, the login message about broken weekly progress streaks remained.
