Statement on Serbia

On behalf of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), we express our deep concern about recent developments in Serbia and the troubling reports of growing pressures on civil society representatives.

The protection of freedom of expression, freedom of association and assembly for citizens and civil society organisations are fundamental rights, and should be respected even in times of turmoil and protests. Publicly targeting civil society organisations' representatives, silencing their voices and restricting their freedoms are not just acts of repression on individuals, but on the very principles that define a democratic society.

The government must foster a stable and constructive environment, refrain from coercing civil society, respect its fundamental rights, and ensure its ability to operate without restrictions. The EESC has always fervently defended the principles of fundamental rights and the rule of law. Those principles are also enshrined in both the Serbian national legislation and its international commitments.

We will continue to collaborate with Serbian social partners and civil society organisations, with whom we have established privileged and constructive relations over the years through the EU-Serbia Joint Consultative Committee and the Committee's Enlargement Candidate Members initiative.
