"The epidemic is everyone's business. It's not just something for doctors or nurses; it's everyone's business." That's Dr. Christian Mugisa, a physician in Tchomia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, speaking after a training on case surveillance: how to recognize the signs of Ebola, find suspected cases in health facilities and the community, and notify response teams as soon as one is found. His point is simple. None of that works without everyone's participation. A suspected case is only caught early if the person who notices it, such as a nurse, a community health worker, or a family member, reports it right away. Through STRIDES, funded by the U.S. Government, and in partnership with the U.S. Embassy, Kinshasa, FHI 360 and PATH train local physicians and community actors, like Dr. Mugisa, to strengthen this kind of community-based surveillance that catches cases early so that people can receive care and reduce the spread. #GlobalHealthSecurity #FHI360EbolaResponse #EbolaPreparedness #UNGA81

Good teaching opens doors for students. But strong teaching starts with strong support for teachers. In Nigeria and Madagascar, FHI 360 and partners found that effective coaching does not have to be complicated. Flexible coaching models, shared responsibility and easy-to-use tools helped make teacher support more consistent, practical and long-lasting, even in resource-constrained settings. One lesson stood out: Sometimes less really is more. When coaching is simple, adaptable and accessible, educators are better positioned to help students thrive. The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is now the deadliest in the country's history. Confirmed cases have passed 6,100 across seven provinces. Meeting a crisis at this scale requires coordinated action: safe and dignified burials, infection prevention, laboratory testing, contact tracing, and community engagement, all happening simultaneously. Through the U.S. government-funded Strengthening Infectious Disease Detection Systems (STRIDES) Activity and the Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, FHI 360 supports these efforts across affected health zones in the DRC alongside the Congolese Ministry of Public Health.

Nous collaborons en ce sens avec les responsables locaux et les équipes communautaires pour organiser des enterrements sûrs et dignes. Ces équipes s’appuient à la fois sur des relations de confiance au sein de la communauté et sur des pratiques éprouvées de prévention des infections, aidant ainsi les familles à rendre hommage à leurs proches tout en réduisant le risque de transmission du virus Ebola.
