Yesterday, on the International Day of Education, this year’s theme, "The power of youth in co-creating education", put a spotlight on young people as active shapers of learning, not passive recipients. Education is a right. So is participation. Access to safe, inclusive and quality education throughout life, including in emergencies, must go hand in hand with health, social protection, skills and decent work. And we can only meet the needs and aspirations of young people if we listen to them, work with them and provide meaningful opportunities for them to shape decisions, both nationally and internationally. When young people help shape education, learning becomes more relevant, more resilient and more just. This is how we build opportunity for today’s youth and for future generations. #PactForTheFuture #InternationalDayOfEducation #Education #Youth #FutureGenerations
Youth are not just beneficiaries of #Education – they are co-creators of its future. As the first United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Youth, Felipe Paullier Olivera shares how putting young people at the centre of education policy builds more inclusive, relevant and resilient systems. UNESCO is implementing major educational programmes to unleash the potential of millions of young people who need it the most. On this International Day of Education, hear his message as youth lead the transformation of learning for all. The 2026 Youth Report, Lead With Youth, published today by the UN Youth Office and GEM Report UNESCO, marks a transition point for global education governance. For the first time, the report introduces a global indicator measuring youth and student participation in education legislation and policymaking, providing the first comparable evidence of how participation is embedded in national education systems. The findings reveal a persistent gap between consultation and influence: only 1 in 3 governments have formal mechanisms to involve youth, and while 6 in 10 youth and student organizations are consulted during policy design, only 1 in 3 see their feedback reflected. The risk is clear. Education systems that do not meaningfully integrate youth voices weaken their own reform, resilience and long-term relevance. Co-creating education starts with meaningful youth participation❗ If education is to be a human right and a public good, young people must have a real seat at the table where decisions are made. Their ideas, leadership and lived experience are key to building education systems that leave no one behind. Join us as we mark this year's International Day of Education and reaffirm that when #youthlead, education becomes more inclusive and transformative for all ✊
🔔 Again and again: 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Without inclusive, equitable, and lifelong learning opportunities for all, countries cannot break the cycle of poverty or achieve the #GlobalGoals. Youth make up 50%+ of the world’s population, and their futures depend on education. 📚 🙌 This year, the #EducationDay is themed “The power of youth in co-creating education.” Let’s champion the voices, leadership, and ideas of young people everywhere! ℹ️ https://lnkd.in/dQxcCTgz #LeadingSDG4Youth #LeadingSDG4

Ten years ago, UN Security Council resolution 2250 changed the narrative on youth and peace, recognizing young people not as beneficiaries, but as leaders in building and sustaining peace. To mark a decade of progress under the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, the YPS Secretariat, led by UN Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), the United Nations Youth Office, and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), convened a High-Level Stocktaking Meeting in December 2025, bringing together Member States, partners, and youth leaders to reflect on what has worked and what comes next. At the centre of the conversation were young peacebuilders themselves. One of them, Nada Zamel, shared why youth inclusion is essential and why peace must mean more than the absence of violence. For her, peace is justice for all. Watch her remarks below. “We must all be bold enough to change. The world is not waiting. Neither should we.” As he presented his priorities for 2026 to the General Assembly, the Secretary-General highlighted how the #UN80 Initiative is moving from vision to action. In the coming weeks, António Guterres said the United Nations will: ➡️ Begin a series of monthly meetings with Member States on the UN80 Initiative, to foster ongoing dialogue and cooperation on equipping the UN for the future. The first meeting will be on 26th January. ➡️ Present initial assessments on the potential mergers of UNDP with UNOPS and UN Women with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), to enhance efficiency and coherence in development work; and ➡️ Advance the peace operations review mandated under the Pact for the Future, to ensure missions are more effective, responsive and fit for today’s complex challenges. #UnitedToDeliver

“The context is chaos.” In his priority speech for 2026, Secretary-General António Guterres does not look away from the reality we face: conflict, inequality, impunity, and deep fractures in global cooperation. But this is not a speech about despair. It is a call to act. Building on the Pact for the Future and the UN80 Initiative, the Secretary-General is clear. At a moment when international cooperation is most needed, the United Nations must push harder, not retreat. That means moving from the commitments in the Pact for the Future to their delivery. In the next few weeks alone, we will: 🔹 Launch the Independent Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence to provide impartial, evidence-based assessments of AI’s opportunities, risks and impacts 🔹 Put forward the recommendations of the High-Level Expert Group on Beyond GDP to offer new ways to measure progress and well-being and better reflect what truly matters for people and planet 🔹 Deepen the dialogue on UN80 to better equip the UN for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges 🔹 Advance the peace operations review to make them more effective, responsive, and fit for today’s complex challenges This is about keeping multilateralism working, for people, for peace, and for the planet. Across the board, it is full steam ahead. #PactForTheFuture #UN80 #GlobalGoals #UnitedToDeliver

📌 Today we’re highlighting Work Package #9 of the #UN80 Action Plan, which advances a more coherent system-wide approach to human rights support. Anchored in the UN Charter and reaffirmed in the Pact for the Future, human rights are central to the UN’s mandate. This work package creates an opportunity to integrate human rights considerations more consistently across UN system activities, strengthening coordination, avoiding duplication and improving collective impact. To support this, a Human Rights Group led by the High Commissioner for Human Rights will bring together entities from across the UN system to drive system-wide coherence and more effective delivery. ⤵️ Learn more through the link in the comments. #UnitedToDeliver
