Statistical information on coastal regions and island regions are used to measure and monitor the socio-economic performance of the blue economy. The blue economy comprises all activities that are linked to the water, the sea and the oceans.
The EU counts 9 outermost regions, of which 8 are defined as level 2 regions based on the nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (NUTS). The 9th, Saint Martin, belongs to the region of Guadeloupe.
