Comitology – European Commission proposes amendments
The Commission has adopted on 14 February 2017 a proposal for targeted and limited amendments to Regulation (EU) 182/2011, known as the 'Comitology Regulation'.
In line with the commitment of President Juncker in his State of the Union speech, the aim is to ensure wider political transparency, accountability and ownership by Member States of politically sensitive implementing acts.
The term "comitology" is shorthand for the way the Commission exercises the implementing powers conferred by the EU legislator with the assistance of committees of representatives from the EU Member States. "Comitology committees" give an opinion on draft implementing acts prepared by the Commission departments. They are chaired by the European Commission.
