Bolts are the ammunition used by crossbows. Most types of bolts are made using a combination of the Smithing and Fletching skills, the initial bolts being made with Smithing (each metal bar makes 50 unfinished bolts) and feathers being added with Fletching. Each bolt requires 1 feather. 10 bolts are made at once every 0.6 seconds, up to 15 sets in one go (150 bolts total).
Certain special bolts can only be obtained through other methods, such as monster drops or specialist shops.
Bolts have a chance of breaking after being fired, losing the bolt. The chance of losing a bolt is 15% per shot (not per hit; multi-hit abilities count as one shot). Remaining bolts will appear on the ground under the enemy and can be picked up. One method of preventing losing dropped bolts is to use Ava's device, which collects ammunition in combat. At level 50 Ranged, this becomes a passive effect. This requires the player to have completed the quest Animal Magnetism.
Mechanics
[edit | edit source]Bolts may be used with crossbows that are lower level than themselves, but their damage will be capped at the crossbow's level.[1] For example, if one were to use level 80 royal bolts with a level 50 rune crossbow, the bolts would perform as level 50 bolts because the crossbow is level 50. Conversely, if one were to use level 30 mithril bolts with a level 60 dragon crossbow, the bolts would still perform as level 30 despite the higher level crossbow.
There are several quivers that can be filled with bolts and equipped to gain Prayer bonuses and other passive effects. These include the various levels of Tirannwn quivers, which hold one ammo type at a time, as well as Pernix's quiver, which can hold two ammo types at a time. Pernix's quiver also has a passive effect that increases the maximum damage of Ranged attacks by +4% when fighting targets that are under 25% health.
Different types of bolts can also be stored in a bolt pouch to conserve space. However, bolt pouches cannot be directly equipped, remaining in the inventory; cannot store bakriminel bolts; and are always lost on death, including any bolts stored inside. For these reasons, it is not recommended to use them.
List of bolts
[edit | edit source]Standard bolts
[edit | edit source]The majority of bolts can be created by Smithing unfinished bolts and then finishing them with feathers, using the Fletching skill. Some higher level bolts, such as royal bolts and blight bolts, are instead received as drops from monsters.
All smithable bolts, as well as ascension bolts can be enhanced by adding bolt tips, including those crafted from gems, usually giving a higher damage stat and minimum crossbow tier needed to fire them with uncapped damage. Tipping bolts tip 10 bolts at once, taking 1.2 seconds per set, and up to 60 sets can be made in one go (600 bolts in total).

Bakriminel bolts
[edit | edit source]Bakriminel bolts are tier 80 bolts fletched from bloodwood logs. The unfinished bolts must be assembled with bakriminel bolt tips while standing close to the bloodwood tree that the logs were cut from, or the logs and unfinished bolts will disintegrate. They are especially damaging against mages in PvP with specific targeted attacks.
They can be enhanced by adding bolt tips from gems (turns them tier 85) and can be further improved by enchanting them (turns them tier 95). This cause them to lose their mage-targeting effects, but gain the same effects as gem-tipped metal bolts.

Enchanted bolts
[edit | edit source]Gem-tipped bolts can be improved by enchanting them into enchanted bolts, which raises both the damage and tier requirement further. This also gives them passive effects that can be triggered with auto attacks and abilities, with abilities consuming one bolt per activation. The chance of the special effect occurring is increased 2% additively[source needed] by the elite Seers' Village achievements, and 20% multiplicatively[source needed] by the Ranged cape perk.
