Energy

Run energy (sometimes called Stamina or Run) is a player's ability to run rather than walk around the landscape, and is measured as a percentage. Players all run at the same rate, unless their energy is at 0%, in which case they cannot run at all. Running is exactly twice as fast as walking. A player running covers 20 squares in 6 seconds, while a player walking covers 10 squares in the same time. Energy gradually depletes whilst the player is running, and recovers whilst they are not.

The energy level is displayed on the top-right hand corner of the minimap. These values show how much longer a player can run. Players can switch this option on to run everywhere they go, or they can run to one particular destination by holding down Ctrl when they click to move (see Game controls). Free-to-play players and players with an Agility level of 1 have a recovery rate of 0.8 energy per second.

Using energy

[edit | edit source]
A player running, depleting energy.

Energy starts at 100% by default, but decreases as the player runs around. A player with 1 Agility will be able to run for about 1:26 before running out of energy, and at level 99 Agility will be able to run for about 2:00 before running out of energy. Every level of Agility effectively increases the duration a player can run by 1 game tick.

The rate at which energy goes down also increases with the weight of the items they are carrying (i.e. items in the inventory and any items they are wearing or have equipped). This rate is approximated by the following equation: E=0.92W10 where E=Run Efficiency and W=Weight effectively carried in kg. Players can reduce their effective carry weight by equipping weight-reducing equipment such as the boots of lightness.

Getting hit by the special attack of Morrigan's throwing axe multiplies the drain by 10x for a minute.

When the energy reaches 0%, running will be disabled automatically and the player can only walk. Running can be manually re-enabled when the player has more than 0% energy, and it will automatically re-enable when the player has at least 40% run energy.

Delver's anklet reduces the player's run energy drain by 50% when equipped.

Recovering energy

[edit | edit source]
A player walking, recovering energy.

Energy gradually recovers (increasing up to a maximum of 100%) any time that the player is not running, i.e. walking or standing still, except at certain times when the player is doing something else, such as crossing an agility obstacle. The rate at which it recovers increases with the player's Agility level, but does not recover at all when the player is logged out of the game. Recovery rates for energy are listed below.

At level 1 Agility:

  • Walking/standing - 1:15 to regenerate from 0-100.
  • Resting - 35 seconds to restore from 0-100.
  • Listening To a Musician - 25 seconds to restore from 0-100

At Level 99 Agility:

  • Walking/standing - 55 seconds to regenerate from 0-100.
  • Resting - 15 seconds to restore from 0-100.
  • Listening To a Musician - 15 seconds to restore from 0-100

Each Agility level above 1 that a player has seems to reduce the time required to regenerate energy back to 100% by about 0.3 seconds or half of a game tick. Weight does not have any impact on energy recovery.

Musicians

[edit | edit source]

Listening to musicians help restore run energy faster. These NPCs were introduced with the run energy update. Listening to them will recover 100% energy in 15 to 25 seconds, depending on Agility level.

Resting

[edit | edit source]

Resting helps the player restore energy at a faster rate than standing still or walking, but at a slower rate than listening to a musician. Resting will recover 100% energy in 15 to 35 seconds, depending on Agility level.

Useful tips

[edit | edit source]
The rest option under the run button.
  • It should be noted that running and walking is slightly slower than running and resting, because the tiles travelled to time taken ratio for running and walking is approximately 1.81, while for running and resting it is 2.06
  • Players can temporarily run even when this option is switched off by holding down the control (Ctrl) key on the keyboard when they click the mouse to select a destination. This can be very useful when an item appears on the ground; if the player holds down control and clicks on the item, then their on-screen character will automatically run to the item and pick it up.
  • Players who have completed As a First Resort can dive in the salt-water spring in Oo'glog. Continually restores run energy to 100% every few seconds for 10–23 minutes depending on Agility level. Players will receive an in-game message when the effect has worn off.
  • Players who have 52 Summoning can make use of the spirit terrorbird familiar which has a Spirit Terrorbird scroll (Tireless Run). This allows players to run indefinitely.

Update history

[edit | edit source]
This information has been compiled as part of the update history project. Some updates may not be included – see here for how to help out!
  • update 19 January 2026 (Update):
    • The option on the Run Energy button on the minimap to begin resting was changed from "Rest" to "Toggle Rest".
  • patch 9 December 2019 (Update):
    • Run button is now redrawn after hiding the minimap and then re-logging on mobile.
  • patch 4 December 2017 (Update):
    • The Agility level modifier to run energy recovery/drain is no longer capped to level 1 on free worlds.
  • patch 2 March 2015 (Update):
    • A message informing new players about their run energy depleting will no longer appear if they have guidance system hints toggled off.
  • ninja 3 March 2014 (Update):
    • The run energy drained from going across the snow towards the entrance to the God Wars Dungeon has been reduced.
  • patch 17 June 2013 (Update):
    • The run icon now functions correctly with the action bar.
  • patch 24 June 2010 (Update):
    • Updated the run animations when wielding chinchompas.
  • patch 9 November 2009 (Update):
    • Run energy should now continue to be restored when charging various orbs.
  • patch 8 July 2009 (Update):
    • Corrected the run mode option text after resting.
  • update 9 June 2009 (Update):
    • Adjusted both the rate at which your energy drains when running AND the rate at which it returns. Overall, these changes mean you will be able to spend a greater proportion of time running than before.
    • You can now sit down and rest anywhere by right-clicking on the run button, which will recharge your run energy (and Hitpoints) much faster (the musicians located at various places around Gielinor provide even faster recharge rates).
    • Adjusted all energy-restoring potions and food so that they restore more run energy, to make sure they are still useful in light of the above changes.
    • Agility has been made more effective for improving running, as it now reduces your recharge time AND increases the distance you can run per run energy point. Agility levels 50-99 in particular have been made more useful, as previously they offered very little extra running advantage.
    • Agility no longer gives a boost on free worlds, as it was giving members an unfair advantage against free users when PKing or resource gathering on free worlds. Members’ features were always supposed to be turned off on free worlds to avoid spoiling the game for the free players, and indeed most of them were (which is why you can’t use members’ weapons on free worlds, for example), but for some reason we missed the Agility one. Of course, members are welcome to also play on free worlds if they want to, but they shouldn’t expect to have an unfair advantage against free users when playing on a free users’ world.
  • update 29 March 2004 (Update):
    • This content became permanently available with the launch of RuneScape 2.
  • update 7 January 2004 (Update):
    • Added to the RuneScape 2 beta.
      • Your character can now run which makes you move twice as fast. To run choose the option in the new 'player options' menu. Alternatively just hold down 'control' on your keyboard when you click to walk. You can't run constantly, and will need to take occasional breaks. How long you can run for depends on how much you are carrying, and how fast your energy restores depends on your agility.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • On the 19 August 2008, a hidden update was made so that the "run" option can now be turned on and off via the run percentage icon next to the minimap in the top right of the screen.
  • After the updates of 25 March 2009, if you right-clicked the Run icon, an option would appear saying "Rest". Clicking on it would give you the message "Coming Soon". On 23 April 2009, a Developers' Blog was released informing players of the new "rest" option that they are working on which allows players to restore their run energy quickly without the use of potions or spirit terrorbirds.
  • There is a glitch with the run button when the run icon next to the minimap is highlighted but the player is walking, not running. This happens when all run energy is lost and then, with 0 energy, turn run on. This will show run as on but the player will be walking. Jagex has yet to fix the glitch.
  • After a game of Fist of Guthix, energy will be restored to 100%. Dying will also fully restore energy (as well all other reduced stats).
  • Using the magical feather will instantly deplete a player's run energy. Using it when a player's run energy is already depleted awards the Exhausted Rest override.
