Food

Food, in RuneScape, is what enables the player to regain life points and avoid death. Some food may have additional or different effects as well. Food can be obtained through the Cooking and Farming skills, as a drop from certain monsters, from other players, or from non-player characters.

Some food items affect stats other than life points. Jug of wine increases life points, though it temporarily lowers the drinker's Attack level, while their Strength level temporarily increases. Beer raises Strength while reducing Attack. The negative effects eventually wear off, and the affected stats return to normal. Most effects do not stack.

Outside of combat, eating a piece of food will not consume adrenaline, but in combat, it will drain 3% adrenaline per piece of food, unless the food belongs to the "non-solid" category (cooked karambwan, green blubber jellyfish, and blue blubber jellyfish). Food can still be eaten in combat while adrenaline is at 0%.

The Eat Food ability will eat the first piece of food in the player's inventory.

Common food

The table below shows common food items. A complete list of cooked food can be found in the Cooking skill page.

Types of food

[edit | edit source]

There are many types of food such as fish, meat, bread, cakes, pies, and pizza. There are also foods which grow from the ground, such as raw potatoes, cabbages, and onions; these items can be put into baskets and sacks. Players can also get food as a treasure trail reward in the form of purple sweets or holy biscuits. Lastly, there are holiday items food such as pumpkins and Easter eggs. It is strongly recommended that players do not eat holiday items as they are rare and extremely valuable.

Most types of food can be found in one of the following articles:

Stackable foods

[edit | edit source]
Stackable foods theoretically provide a near infinite source of healing (and stat restoration).

Certain foods are stackable, meaning any quantity of the food may be carried within a single inventory space. These foods are used by players in situations where large amounts of healing are required, bolstered also by certain necklaces such as the expensive spices, an amulet which increases the amount by which food heals you.

The following is a list of stackable foods:

Choosing the right food

[edit | edit source]

Factors to consider when choosing the right food:

  • Some items require inventory space, like baskets of strawberries to take out strawberries. Monsters drop items that require space, so consider the value and frequency of drops when bringing food.
  • Try to avoid eating during combat if it is not necessary as it drains adrenaline. Some areas have aggressive monsters that hit hard, and foods that take multiple bites, like cake, may cause problems.
  • Some foods, such as cakes, require two or more servings. This can easily be remedied by storing the food in a Cornucopia during combat as this action does not interrupt attacks and allows the food to be eaten at once.
  • Eating one piece of pie only takes 0.6 seconds as opposed to other foods, which normally take 1.8 seconds (3x longer), making high-level pies valuable where fast healing is necessary.
  • Items such as expensive spices, shark's tooth necklace, necklace of gluttony, and healer's insignia, as well as the Blessing of Het and Hungry Like the Wolf relic powers, can increase the potency of healing from eating certain types of food.

Highest-healing food

[edit | edit source]

The highest-healing single-use food for non-members is a swordfish (1,400 life points); for members, it is the sailfish calorie bomb (2,880 life points).

The primal feast heals a total of 10,000 life points; however, it has to be unpacked into four primal portions healing 2,500 life points each. The giant kebbit meat heals 2,800 life points and allows overhealing up to 15% of the player's maximum life points. The great gunkan heals 1,500 life points instantly, and then continues to heal 150 life points per 1.2 seconds for 9 times total (10.8 seconds), for a total of 2,850 life points.

However, due to scaling to the maximum life points of the player, cooked sweetcorn can have a base healing value of up to 3,400 life points, making it the highest single-use food under specific conditions. In contrast, a basket of strawberries can, in ideal conditions, have a base healing value of up to 2120 life points per contained strawberry for a total of 10,600 life points, just barely beating primal feast as the highest non-stackable life points per inventory slot food.

The fastest-healing food for members with multiple bites is the summer pie, which takes only 0.6 seconds per bite (three times faster than most foods).

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The mouse cursor for eating (after 2 September 2009 updates) represents a half-eaten apple, although you cannot eat apples in RuneScape (except rotten apples, which do not heal anything).
  • The animations for eating food were updated with the release of the Dungeoneering skill.
  • In Daemonheim, it is possible to "feed" a fellow party member by using a piece of food on them, which makes them perform the eating animation and heal, using the food from your inventory. This is only possible outside of Daemonheim when on a co-op Slayer task with the ability bought at a Slayer Master with co-op Slayer points.
  • Most foods take 3 ticks (1.8 seconds) to eat; exceptions are purple sweets and pies.
