Who says a degree in Scandinavian Studies is useless? At the very least, it came in quite handy for telling one of my favorite stories in so many different ways today: on German public radio, in a podcast, and in articles for both regional and international newspapers. And from several perspectives – historical, humorous, yet also reflective of the challenges we still face today. It’s the story of the Icelandic women who, 50 years ago, had a “crazy idea” that nearly failed at first. But in the end 90 percent of the country’s women rallied behind it and brought the nation to a standstill by taking a day off. With factories closed, hot dogs sold out, and telephones silent, everyone suddenly realized just how vital women were to every part of society. The day became a milestone on Iceland’s path to the top of global gender equality rankings. And yet, this 50th anniversary is not purely a celebration – not in Iceland, nor for women elsewhere. There’s still far too much to do, and the global rollback on women’s rights is all too visible. But the spirit of Iceland’s “Women’s Day Off” in 1975 can – and should – continue to inspire us. Thanks to the former Redstockings for their time and trust, and to all the colleagues involved at WDR and SWR, Dagens ETC and Frankfurter Rundschau and especially Michael Richmann, for a wonderful collaboration!
