International Journalists' Programmes

Non-profit Organizations

We are an independent organisation established in 1981 to support the international exchange of journalists.

About us

The International Journalists' Programmes (IJP) is a non-profit and economically as well as politically independent organisation for the promotion of young journalists. It was established in 1981. IJP is an association, registered in Germany at the local court in Koenigstein near Frankfurt/Main under reg. no. 8 VR 646. Through its scholarship programmes, IJP supports journalists in two ways: Firstly, by setting the stage for new career opportunities and thus contributing to a more differentiated reporting of foreign affairs; and secondly, by promoting professional and personal ties between journalists. With more than 3,000 journalists from all over the world, IJP builds one of the largest international networks of media professionals, including many leading figures of the media landscape. The exchange of ideas between these alumni and participants of recent programmes is an important aim of the IJP alumni activities.

Who says a degree in Scandinavian Studies is useless? At the very least, it came in quite handy for telling one of my favorite stories in so many different ways today: on German public radio, in a podcast, and in articles for both regional and international newspapers. And from several perspectives – historical, humorous, yet also reflective of the challenges we still face today. It’s the story of the Icelandic women who, 50 years ago, had a “crazy idea” that nearly failed at first. But in the end 90 percent of the country’s women rallied behind it and brought the nation to a standstill by taking a day off. With factories closed, hot dogs sold out, and telephones silent, everyone suddenly realized just how vital women were to every part of society. The day became a milestone on Iceland’s path to the top of global gender equality rankings. And yet, this 50th anniversary is not purely a celebration – not in Iceland, nor for women elsewhere. There’s still far too much to do, and the global rollback on women’s rights is all too visible. But the spirit of Iceland’s “Women’s Day Off” in 1975 can – and should – continue to inspire us. Thanks to the former Redstockings for their time and trust, and to all the colleagues involved at WDR and SWR, Dagens ETC and Frankfurter Rundschau and especially Michael Richmann, for a wonderful collaboration! 🤝Building a Network for Truthful Climate Reporting Across Europe 🎥 What does it take to strengthen climate journalism — and keep climate action high on the media agenda? Through EUKI project 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, journalists from Germany and Eastern Europe spent several weeks reporting abroad — learning how climate and energy policies play out in different contexts, and how local stories can inspire international understanding. 🌍 Since 2018, more than 70 fellows have taken part, hosted by media outlets such as Denník N, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Radio-Television Slovenia. They built a lasting network of professionals committed to independent, solution-oriented, and cross-border climate reporting. 💬 As fellowship programme manager Clemens Bomsdorf (IJP) reflects, the programme’s goal was simple: to promote independent journalism and give participants the freedom to explore. Many fellows still keep climate topics on their home media’s agenda — a long-term ripple effect of informed and responsible reporting. 📖 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dgc5v2YW #EUKI #ClimateJournalism #Fellowship #Media #ClimateAction #IJP #TransformingSocieties #CEE #CrossBorderCooperation Susanne Reiff International Journalists' Programmes Clean Energy Wire | CLEW

Drei Monate sind nicht viel Zeit, also let's go 🇹🇷

Join us at the Berlin Science Week on 1 November – Hype and Hopes of Longevity: What will really help us live better for longer? Over the past decade, longevity has become a buzzword. But the “better life” is not just about medical interventions, new drugs and diets – it requires a holistic approach to designing healthy and sustainable livelihoods. 💡 At the Inspiration Stage of the #BerlinScienceWeek, Shuyan Liu (Charité Berlin) and Sofia Christensen (freelance journalist based in Berlin) from our #ResearchComLab share their insights on: - What role do mental health and the environment play in extending your health span? - How can we communicate a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of longevity? The audience is invited to imagine what a more sustainable future for all might look like! 🗓️ 1 November 2025 | 4-5 pm | Campus Museum für Naturkunde Berlin ℹ️ Link to the registration in the comments below! We will also present some of the key learnings from the tenth Communication Lab on longevity – a science-media project organised by the Humboldt Foundation in cooperation with the International Journalists' Programmes. More in the comments. We hope to see you there! -------------------------------------------- From 1-10 November, Berlin Science Week presents over 250 events blending science, art, and culture – both in the city and online. #BerlinScienceWeek25

This week I started a new mini professional adventure, joining the Deutsche Welle science desk as an International Journalists' Programmes fellow for the next two months. Between moving to Berlin, meeting new colleagues, and adapting to a different work environment (and a new language!) it's been a real whirlwind of new experiences but one that I'm very much enjoying so far. Last week I also had the opportunity to meet the other IJP fellows from the UK and Germany during a three-day programme of events in London. Grateful to be part of this talented group and looking forward to what lies ahead!

Tech Reporter at Süddeutsche Zeitung Dossier

Good afternoon from London, where —  thanks to the friendly support of International Journalists' Programmes, The Economist and Süddeutsche Zeitung Dossier — I get to spend a few weeks as a visiting journalist at The Economist's headquarters. 📰🌍😎 It's only the second day, but already shaping up to become an intellectually stimulating autumn adventure filled with economics, politics, tech, culture and more. Very excited to be here! ✍🍂💫 PS: My first day was Margaret Thatcher's 100th birthday — let's find out what that means for the weeks ahead. 👀

Last week I met my fellow fellows! 🇩🇪🇬🇧 With only a few days to go before our UK/Germany placements kick off, this year's George Weidenfeld Fellowship awardees gathered with the International Journalists' Programmes for three days of chats, tours, galleries and walks. We got to see the ARD studio and visited Bloomberg (which has a tinier model of the building inside a model of the building (and fishtanks!)). We also met with Christian Doktor, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, and spoke about Anglo-German relations and the challenges facing European diplomacy today. It's always a blast to hang out with other journos, but meeting this bright, brilliant, talented group was such a treat. I can't wait to see what everyone gets up to over the next few weeks - London/Hamburg/Berlin won't know what hit it. Thanks to Vassilios Theodossiou and the brilliant staff at International Journalists' Programmes for looking after us so well ⭐

💬 From JoinPolitics, 4EIGN Talents GmbH to PHINEO gAG , ProjectTogether, Business Council for Democracy BC4D of the Hertie Foundation, or the International Journalists' Programmes (IJP e.V.) – each shows how diverse #democratic #engagement can be. Democracy also needs #capital – not only financial, but social, intellectual, and relational. How we choose to #invest our #time, #trust, or #resources defines the kind of #society we build. 💭 Who benefits? 💭 What values do we strengthen? 💭 What kind of future do we enable? That’s what the #DemocracyPitch by encourageventures e.V. stands for: It invites #nonprofits and #startups alike to become visible, connect across sectors, and show how financial and social capital can reinforce each other – and, ultimately, our democracy. This event also aims to mobilize capital and partnerships for those advancing democratic innovation and societal resilience. 🟣 Be bold and take part – whether you’re a startup or a non-profit. Together we can make democracy tangible: through ideas, through dialogue, and through how we invest in one another. 👉 More inspiration from the Robert Bosch Stiftung: 🔗 Strengthening democracy – 10 things you can do right now https://lnkd.in/gVj_h3ww #Democracy #Impact #EncourageVentures #BusinessForDemocracy Birka Wolff Heidrun Twesten Alexa Gorman Angela De Giacomo Alina Klarner Elisabeth Niejahr Martin Ewald Moritz Ettl Saskia Bruysten Ashoka Value for Good GmbH

𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀! ✊ Worldwide, we see democracy under pressure – and equality is often the first to be rolled back. The latest V-Dem Institute report paints an alarming picture: For the first time in over two decades, autocracies outnumber democracies. As a consequence, 72% of the world’s population – that makes about 5.8 billion people – now live under autocratic rule. Liberal democracies thus represent the rarest form of government in the world. In light of this development, we believe it’s more important than ever to stand together and amplify the voices that stengthen democratic values. We believe it takes joint action to counter this trend – not only within the start-up ecosystem, but beyond. That’s why we are launching the 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵: A stage for organizations that actively strengthen democracy to present their work and connect with donors, investors and supporters - our very own “Democracy Patrons". 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿: 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿, 𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. 👉 How you can contribute: 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝟯𝟭 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, you can suggest Non-Profit organizations looking for donations or Startups looking for investments that: 1️⃣ Effectively promote democracy and 2️⃣ have at least one woman on their board or management team. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQBbaSqf Selected organizations will pitch online on December 11 this winter. So if you're still looking for great initiatives standing up for democracy to support with your year-end donations – stay tuned, we'll keep you updated here! #DemocracyPitch #EncourageDemocracy #DefendDemocracy #Together #EncourageVentures
