Greening the Blue Report 2021
The UN System’s Environmental Footprint and Efforts to Reduce It
The Greening the Blue Report 2021 provides a snapshot of the UN system’s environmental impacts throughout 2020 and its activities to reduce them. The 2021 edition of the Report covers data for 2020 on environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions, waste, water, environmental management, and, for the first time, procurement and human resources management functions. The report includes data on 56 entities from across the UN system, representing approximately 315,000 personnel in Headquarters, in thousands of field offices, and operations on the ground. It shows that in 2020, the UN system generated ~1.5 million tonnes CO2eq greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with per capita emissions of 5 tonnes CO2eq. In 2020, the emissions sources were 32 percent from air travel, 12 percent from other travel (rail, road, sea, etc.), and 55 percent from facilities. In 2020, 19 percent of UN electricity worldwide came from the use of renewable energies either purchased from the country grid or self-generated. The UN system was able to offset 99 percent of GHG emissions. While offsetting is an important factor in managing unavoidable emissions, the priority for the UN system remains emissions reductions and elimination. This edition of the Report reveals the impacts of COVID-19 on the UN system’s environmental footprint. With significant worldwide travel restrictions and many UN personnel working from home, the UN system generated approximately 25 percent fewer GHG emissions than in 2019.

Our Common Agenda - Report of the Secretary-General
Author: United NationsOn the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations, the world has faced its biggest shared test since the Second World War in the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Yet while our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together, international cooperation has never been harder to achieve. This report answers a call from UN Member States to provide recommendations to advance our common agenda and to respond to current and future challenges. Its proposals are grounded in a renewal of the social contract, adapted to the challenges of this century, taking into account younger and future generations, complemented by a new global deal to better protect the global commons and deliver global public goods. Through a deepening of solidarity—at the national level, between generations, and in the multilateral system—Our Common Agenda provides a path forward to a greener, safer and better future.

Human resources management and training
Compilation of good practices in statistical offices
Author: United NationsThe Conference of European Statisticians (CES) at its plenary session in 2006 conducted a seminar on human resources and training in statistical offices. The seminar concluded that human resources and training are crucial elements for the successful fulfilment of the mission of the offices and that there was a need to continue the exchange of experience in the area of human resources and training. Hence, as a follow-up to the CES seminar, workshops on human resources management and training (HRMT) were organised in 2008, 2010 and 2012 where HRMT issues were discussed. This paper takes a forward looking approach and provides an outline of the future challenges in the area of HRMT for statistical offices. It also on the discussions at the workshop in 2012 and incorporates issues that were raised by countries, as well as information collected through a survey to CES member countries on their practices and plans in HRMT.

Employee engagement and internal communication
Effective internal communication is critical to an organization’s well-being. Even the most compelling vision for the development and growth of a statistical organization cannot inspire or motivate employees unless it is shared with every staff member in a form that resonates with them both individually and collectively. An inspired and motivated workforce, in turn, is the decisive element that enables a statistical organization to achieve its mission.
