  • A new 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 provides a snapshot of successful technologies tested across 189 demonstrators supported by EU programmes including Horizon Europe, the LIFE programme and the Innovation Fund. Industry accounts for around 25% of the EU’s final energy consumption. 49% of industrial energy consumption comes from fossil fuels. For EU industry, this strategic dependence creates a vulnerability to the volatility of fossil fuel markets and can undermine its competitiveness. The projects in this report provide examples for European industries on how to reduce cost and dependence on imported fossil fuels by direct electrification and by improving industrial energy efficiency. They represent around €1 billion of investments, and cover 5 technology families ⚡ industrial heat pumps ⚡ electric heat ⚡ flexibility and storage ⚡ waste heat recovery ⚡ motor systems and digital 🔎 The large-scale deployment of these technologies alone could halve the share of fossil fuel consumption in industrial energy demand by 2040. It could increase the industrial energy efficiency by a third in the same period. The report was prepared by the Directorate-General for Energy in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, the Directorate-General for Climate Action, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency and the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Details and contacts for each technology and project can be found in the report. • Europe is preparing for a challenging winter with high energy prices and the potential reduced availability of gas and oil linked to the conflict in the Middle East. In this context, we are proposing flexibility to methane importers to help save costs with a proposal to postpone by 1 year the implementation of specific provisions of the EU Methane Regulation. To alleviate the pressure on European industry and national administrations, this targeted amendment concerns the monitoring, reporting and verification obligations for natural gas, oil and coal importers. It also concerns the provisions related to the reporting on methane-intensity requirements for both importers and EU producers. The proposed amendment does not affect the ambition, integrity and scope of the Regulation, reaffirming our commitment to reduce methane emissions. It will allow extra time for importers to ensure full compliance with requirements of the Regulation in the very challenging current context of global energy markets. This secondary legislation provides the reporting templates required by the Methane Regulation. By establishing a common reporting system for methane emissions, it aims to simplify and streamline the reporting process. Input from this consultation will feed into the Commission’s preparations for taking the measures forward. The implementing regulation is scheduled for adoption by the end of 2026. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ec3wcvM4 #MethaneEmissions #EUHaveYourSay

  • Importing fossil fuels to Europe is 🫰 expensive 😒 unpredictable 🤦 and unsustainable The Electrification Action Plan sets an indicative target of 46% electrification by 2040 - to be assessed as part of the post-2030 Energy Union package. This could cut the EU's fossil fuel import bill by €260 billion per year by 2040 💶 ⚡ Electrification comes with substantial benefits for the EU economy, businesses and citizens in terms of lower energy prices and competitiveness, stronger energy security and resilience. While gas storage levels are below historical levels, the report confirms that the EU gas system is sufficiently flexible to meet demand this winter. The EU is better prepared than in 2021 – the last time October storage levels were so low - thanks to increased gas supply diversification, higher liquefied natural gas (LNG) import capacity, and reduced gas demand, which compensate for the low storage levels.
