Geologically, the United States encompasses an exceptionally diverse range of geological provinces and tectonic settings. These include the Precambrian Canadian Shield in the north, the Appalachian orogen in the east, the stable interior cratonic platforms of the Midwest, the Rocky Mountains and associated fold-and-thrust belts, the Basin and Range Province, the Colorado Plateau, the Sierra Nevada batholith, and the active continental margin of the Pacific Coast. Alaska adds further complexity with accreted terranes, major fault systems, and extensive volcanic arcs, while Hawaii represents an oceanic hotspot volcanic system.
The United States hosts a wide variety of mineral deposits formed through igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic processes. Major commodities include gold, silver, copper, iron, uranium, lead, zinc, rare earth elements, and industrial minerals. The country is also notable for numerous classic and type localities, including pegmatites, hydrothermal vein systems, porphyry copper deposits, sediment-hosted ores, evaporite basins, and fossiliferous mineral occurrences. Many mineral species were first described from localities within the United States, and older labels may reflect historical mining districts or territorial designations rather than modern state names.
Administratively, the United States is subdivided into states, which are further divided into counties or equivalent local units. These subdivisions form the primary political framework used in Mindat’s locality hierarchy, with additional nested localities for districts, mines, and specific sites.
