North America is a continent extending from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Isthmus of Panama in the south, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It comprises a wide range of physiographic regions, including extensive cratonic interiors, major mountain belts, sedimentary basins, and volcanic provinces.

Geologically, North America is built around the ancient Precambrian core of the Canadian Shield, which forms a stable craton exposed across much of Canada and parts of the northern United States. This core is flanked by younger sedimentary platforms and basins, as well as major orogenic belts produced by successive tectonic events. The Appalachian Mountains along the eastern margin record multiple Paleozoic orogenies, while the Cordilleran systems of the western margin reflect long-lived Mesozoic and Cenozoic subduction, accretion, and magmatism. Rifting, strike-slip faulting, and hotspot volcanism have further modified the continent, producing features such as the Basin and Range Province and large igneous provinces.

This geological diversity has resulted in a wide range of mineralisation styles. North America hosts significant magmatic, hydrothermal, sedimentary, and metamorphic mineral deposits, including large metallic ore provinces, industrial mineral resources, and gemstone occurrences. Mineralisation is closely linked to cratonic settings, orogenic belts, sedimentary basins, and magmatic arcs, with many classic mineral localities distributed across the continent.
